Nash is defensive nightmare BY JOE STEVENS, Staff Writer PHOENIX - Steve Nash is not a 7-foot center like Shaquille O'Neal. He is not a 21-year-old wunderkind like LeBron James. Yet the 6-foot-3, two-time defending MVP might give the Clippers more defensive problems than any other player in the NBA. Containing Nash could be the biggest key for the Clippers in the Western Conference semifinals, and one huge problem they face is that it's difficult to double-team him because it leaves one of Phoenix's many shooters open. Clippers coach Mike Dunleavy says Nash is one of the top five difficult players to defend in the league with a short list that includes James, Kobe Bryant and Tony Parker. Nash has something those other players don't. "The thing he has going for him ... is that the supporting cast he has stretches the floor so much for him," Dunleavy said. Elton Brand says it is hard to gauge when he should leave his man to double-team Nash. "If I don't help out, he gets a layup," Brand said. "But because of the shooters ,if I help out, he finds an open guy for a three." Quinton Ross, the Clippers' defensive stopper, says there is no easy answer. "We're trying to figure that out right now,"' Ross said. "...The only thing you can try to do is hope to get the ball out of his hands and get a stop." Kaman's compliments: Chris Kaman was asked about just how competitive Dunleavy is. "When you lose and there's a reason why, he lets everybody know the reason why, " Kaman said. "When we watch the film, he points out where you made your mistakes and what you have to do next time. He's really adamant, and he's anal about everything." Spanning the globe: Sam Cassell recently talked about being the oldest player left in the playoffs, but a little research showed that New Jersey's Clifford Robinson is the oldest at 39. Cassell is 36. In the regular season, only three players were older than Cassell - Houston's Dikembe Mutombo (39), Robinson and Milwaukee's Ervin Johnson (38). One difference is that they are all 6-foot-10 or taller, while Cassell is 6-foot-3. In addition, Cassell plays a larger role than those players. "I'm the best 36-year-old man in the country, playing the game of basketball," Cassell said. "Write that down. You find another one. Go to Brazil.
