Suns need Nash to play like an MVP in Game 6

East Valley Tribune (Mesa, Ariz.)
MESA, Ariz. - The chant needs to be heard again Saturday night.
MVP, MVP, MVP.
Like a Chicago election, it should be heard early and often.
MVP, MVP, MVP.
It has to be the sound that rings in the ears and carries through the night.
MVP, MVP, MVP.
Dirk Nowitzki played like an MVP in Game 5.
Now, Steve Nash has to show why he was the MVP.
''Big moments, big games, big players,'' Suns coach Mike D'Antoni is fond of
saying, and they don't get much bigger than this:
Game 6, the Suns' season on the line. And while Raja Bell's health is
important, and Tim Thomas has to continue to make 3s, the naked truth is that
if there's going to be a Game 7, Nash has to take Phoenix there.
It's his team.
His responsibility.
His burden.
''What better situation is there for an athlete to challenge himself?'' Nash
said Friday.
It's not as if Nash has played poorly this series. He's been his usual
brilliant self, averaging 21 points and 10.4 assists per game while shooting
51 percent from the field.
But in Game 5, it was his good buddy Nowitzki who took over, who carried the
Mavericks on his back with a 50-point performance that will be talked about
for years.
Nash, meanwhile, made just 5 of 17 shots and was 1 of 6 from 3-point range.
His decision-making wasn't up to his usual standards, either, and while he
finished with 20 points and 11 assists, he had less impact on the game than
Thomas.
''I felt robbed a little bit,'' Nash said. ''You can understand nights when
you don't feel good or your body isn't there physically, but I felt good. The
shots felt like they were going in.
''I just didn't make enough for us. It was a little bit disappointing.''
Part of what makes Nash great is that he holds himself accountable. You'll
never hear him blame his coach or his teammates for his struggles. He'll
admit to his shortcomings then do everything possible to fix them.
It may seem unfair to weigh Nash down with Phoenix's fate. He wasn't the only
Sun who struggled in Game 5. Boris Diaw was 6-for-14 from the field, Leandro
Barbosa was 5-for-12, and Eddie House and James Jones combined to score two
points in 24 minutes of play.
But role players aren't going to win this series - for either team. That's up
to the superstars, and just as the onus was on Nowitzki to recover from his
invisible 11-point performance in Game 4, Nash has to bounce back from Game 5.
''I just have to play a little better,'' Nash said.
Odds are he will. Nash usually plays his best when the Suns need him most.
In Phoenix's four elimination games this postseason - Games 5, 6 and 7
against the Los Angeles Lakers and Game 7 against the Los Angeles Clippers -
Nash has averaged 24 points and 9.2 assists while shooting 52 percent from
the field.
That's what an MVP does.
That's who Nash is.
''This is fun,'' he said. ''We're one of only four teams playing right now.''
After their short workout Friday, the Suns said exactly what you'd expect
them to say.
No, they're not worried.
Yes, they think they'll win Game 6 on their home floor.
No, they're not concerned about the prospect of playing Game 7 on the road.
''They (the Mavericks) don't want to go to Game 7,'' D'Antoni said.
Here's guessing they'll have to.
Nowitzki may torture the Suns again, but he's not going to go for 50. And
Nash isn't going to miss 12 of his 17 shots.
MVP, MVP, MVP.
The Suns heard it in Dallas and winced.
They'll hear it again Saturday night and bask in its adulation.
