Rockets Trip Up McGrady, Knicks

Did anyone really think this was just any ordinary game for T-Mac?
Facing his former team for the first time since coming to New York at last
month’s trade deadline, Tracy McGrady surpassed his usual 25-minute limit in
the Knicks hard-fought 116-112 defeat to the Houston Rockets Sunday afternoon
at Madison Square Garden.
“It was probably one of my better all-around games with the way I played
physically and the way I felt,” said McGrady, who is still working his way
back from microfracture knee surgery. “I tried to do a little bit of
everything. I tried to post, tried to go outside, tried rebound a little bit,
tried to make plays.”
His numbers say it all. McGrady scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds,
dished out five assists and recorded two blocks and a pair of steals. He also
played 33 minutes - one shy of his season high - including all 12 minutes of
the first quarter when the Knicks raced out to a 17-point lead.
The Knicks were much better with McGrady on the floor than without him,
outscoring the Rockets by 15 when he was in the game. So it was no surprise D
’Antoni had McGrady on the floor during the final 4:55, even though T-Mac
typically doesn’t play beyond 25 minutes as he continues his comeback.
“He was kind of jacked up so I thought he wanted to play,” Knicks head
coach Mike D’Antoni said. “I thought why not give him a chance to try to do
it?”
McGrady played well down the stretch but was unable to carry the Knicks to
their second straight win. The Knicks led 110-107 with over two minutes
remaining before Houston’s Aaron Brooks scored eight unanswered points,
which gave the Rockets the lead for good.
“Whoever makes the big shots at the end of games usually wins,” D’Antoni
said.
McGrady was one of four Knicks to score in double figures. David Lee led the
way with 28 points and 20 rebounds, while Danilo Gallinari and rookie Toney
Douglas scored 26 apiece.
McGrady’s five and a half seasons with the Rockets had its ups and downs.
Houston made it to the playoffs four times with him on its roster and T-Mac
made three All-Star appearances with the Rockets. But the swingman just couldn
’t avoid injuries and ended his Rockets career away from the team recovering
from last season’s surgery.
“I heard some chatter about how they (the Rockets players) wish I was still
there,” McGrady said.
But he is clearly hoping things go a little more smoothly for him in New
York, where he has played in 16 of the 17 games with the Knicks since coming
over at last month’s trade deadline. And judging from his short stint in the
Big Apple so far, he’s on the right path despite admitting he’s still not
100 percent healthy.
“He still just doesn’t have that pop back yet,” D’Antoni said last
Friday. “He’s in the same boat as the other guys. It takes about a year to
get that stuff back. We went through it with Amar’e (Stoudemire) in Phoenix.
It’s hard with microfracture surgery to come back that same year. He’ll be
better when he gets some distance and he’s playing.”
McGrady might not have the “pop” that he once had but he is still a leader
on the court for the young Knicks. He has started every game he’s played in
New York and is currently playing around 27 minutes per game, entering Sunday
afternoon averaging 10.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game.
“He’s a very heady basketball player and he knows how to play,” D’Antoni
said. “He’s just limited. Physically, he’s not strong right now.”
