MONTREAL — As adorable as tennis star Ana Ivanovic is, eventually someone
was going to say no to her.
Tennis Canada turned out to be the bad guy, refusing to give the former No. 1
player in the world a main-draw wild card into the Rogers Cup in Montreal.
The vast majority of media and fans seem squarely on the side of the Serbian
cutie.

fact that she won in Montreal four years ago — and mostly, how cute she is.
Ivanovic is cute, and really nice, and everyone wants her to get back on
track. But in the particular context of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, she’s not
necessarily added value. And that made the decision a little easier for
tournament director Eugene Lapierre.

Wild cards, in theory, are to be used to give Canadian players the
opportunity to compete on the big stage.

“If we didn’t already have the best players in the world, if we didn’t get
all the players we think we can get, my choice would certainly be for the
wild cards to go to international players, because you want to sell the
attraction,” Lapierre said. “But we have them, so it’s normal to give the

There have been exceptions, of course: Mary Pierce one year, the returning
Kim Clijsters last year.

But unlike the three U.S. tournaments (San Diego, Stanford, Cincinnati) that
did give her wild cards, Lapierre did not consider Ivanovic an “
incontournable” — a player you couldn’t pass up like, say, if Steffi Graf
decided she wanted to play.

If you’re looking at an early-week day session, the reality is that local
players like Stephanie Dubois or Valerie Tetreault brings extra value to the
Rogers Cup when it’s in Montreal — as much, arguably, as Ivanovic would. A
San Diego native, for example, wouldn’t have one-tenth the impact on ticket
sales that Ivanovic will have at that tournament.

Stanford has Maria Sharapova, and that’s about it. San Diego, which lost its
WTA Tour event a couple of years ago, needs every marquee name available as

combined attendance for the men’s and women’s tournaments only jumped
14 per cent. So it has some work to do on the women’s side.
Ivanovic will help.

is to win tennis matches. Unseeded, the 22-year-old Serb could very easily
run into a top player in the first round, lose, and be no further ahead.

for a little time to make a tough call.
Had top Canadian Aleksandra Wozniak been straight into the main draw on her
ranking (five players will have to pull out for that to happen), it might
have been different.
Had Dubois of Laval, Que., been guaranteed a wild card (she’s No. 2 in the
country now, but that could change by the time the tournament rolls around),
it might have been different.
Had Lapierre known Serena Williams would bail out, it might have been
different.
But Lapierre didn’t want to leave Ivanovic hanging until the last minute.

Her agent seemed understanding at first, Lapierre said. But later (perhaps
after talking to Ivanovic, or members of her camp), he tried to apply a
little pressure by pointing out that the tournament had awarded wild cards to
international players before, that she was a past winner, that she had been
No. 1.

Should the Rogers Cup have given Ana Ivanovic a wild card?

Two years ago, Ana Ivanovic entered the Rogers Cup in Montreal as the No. 1
player in the world. This year, the 22-year-old Serb will have to qualify
just to make the main draw.

During her tennis free fall, Ivanovic's ranking has slid all the way to No. 65,
a placement which puts her outside of the automatic entry into the field
of 56 for next month's tournament. She had applied for a wild-card berth into
the event but was denied by organizers who plan to give the spot to Stephanie
Dubois, the No. 2 player in Canada.

former, Ivanovic the latter. If the people at the Rogers Cup feel Dubois, who
is from nearby Laval, will generate more interest in their event than Ivanovic,
then so be it.

Tom Tebbutt, a columnist at Canada's Globe and Mail, disagrees. He feels that
Ivanovic deserved a wild card to the event, citing Kim Clijsters receiving
one last year in place of a Canadian player as his main point. While I agree
that Montreal should have given Ivanovic an entry into the event, I disagree
with Tebbutt for two reasons.

First, the Clijsters comparison isn't apt. The Belgian was returning from
retirement and didn't have a chance to accrue the necessary rankings points
for an automatic main-draw berth. Second, the concept of "deserving" a wild
card is a farcical. How can one deserve something that's completely
arbitrary? One doesn't deserve a gift. One gets it for a number of reasons.
Ivanovic had ample chances to improve her ranking and didn't do it. She
needed to earn her way in, not rely upon the whims of tournament officials.

Even in her current funk, Ivanovic should have no trouble advancing through
the qualies to make the main draw. Interestingly, Montreal organizers may be
crossing their fingers that she does. As Tebbutt points out in his column,
the Rogers Cup comes immediately after a tour event in Cincinnati in which
Maria Sharapova, Venus Williams, Kim Clijsters and (maybe) Jelena Jankovic
will compete. Should any of those players advance deep into that tourney, it
wouldn't be surprising to see some late withdrawals for Montreal. In that
case, Ivanovic would be one of the bigger draws.
