在網球公開賽中， "seed" 和"love"出現頻率頗高，
它們已經從"種子"和"愛情"的意思發展成網球場上的
專業術語"種子選手"和"零分"的意思。
本以為這兩個詞在網球場上的意思都來源於英國，其實不然，
"seed"是一個地地道道的美國詞。最能証明這個詞的來源的莫過於
《牛津英語詞典》裡收錄的1898年American Lawn Tennis雜誌
(《美國草地網球》雜誌)中的一句話︰ "Several years ago,
it was decided to "seed" the best players through
the championship draw in handicap tournaments so that
the players in each class shall be separated as far as
possible one from another."
"Love"用作"零分"的意思要追溯到17世紀的短語 "play for love" ,
它的意思是"to play without any wager, for nothing"
(沒有任何賭注的遊戲)，從此"love"就有了"nothing"這個意英語思，
進而引申到網球比賽中，一些牌類遊戲和英國的足球解說中也沿用了
這一說法。在英式英語中，零比零的比賽標準的說法是 "love-all"。
