With Italy and the Netherlands also competing for the top two places in Group C, a cagey opening encounter at the Letzigrund in Zurich was not unexpected. Romania refused to press past the halfway line until the latter stages and were happy to allow the opposition's holding midfielders to dictate possession (which finished 55-45 per cent in France's favour) in less dangerous zones. However, as soon as the ball was switched to either of France's wide players, Piturca's side hunted in packs. In all, Toulalan played 13 passes to Ribery, while Makelele fed Malouda 16 times.
