The UEFA Club Football Awards are traditionally held on the eve of the
UEFA Super Cup, the traditional European season curtain-raiser in Monaco.
Voted for by the head coaches of the 16 sides which reached the
UEFA Champions League knockout rounds, AC Milan's Clarence Seedorf was named
best midfielder last year. Here are the nominees:

Michael Essien (Chelsea FC)
Essien played just about everywhere for Chelsea last season. Right-back,
centre-half, all across the midfield – the only constant was the Ghanaian's
indefatigable commitment and determination. He was sorely missed in January
when on African Cup of Nations duty but Essien came back with aplomb and was
rewarded for his endeavour in July when he signed a new five-year contract.

Cesc Fàbregas (Arsenal FC)
The 'old before your time' epithet is typically used in a derogatory fashion
but in Fàbregas' case it is rare admiration. The departure of Thierry Henry
in summer 2007 heaped even more expectations on his young shoulders but the
21-year-old took it in his stride. His late goal against AC Milan sent the
Gunners through to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, and while
Liverpool halted that run, the Spaniard's thirst for silverware was sated at
UEFA EURO 2008™.

Steven Gerrard (Liverpool FC)
"Of course everybody knows I wanted Gerrard at Chelsea," José Mourinho said
recently. "Why wouldn't I?" It summed up the Liverpool man. Marrying typical
English passion with great technique and an inherent knack of coming to the
fore when he is needed most, the 28-year-old is a manager's dream. In
Liverpool's first game of the 2007/08 campaign he curled in an 87th-minute
winner against Aston Villa FC, his first of 21 goals – including a run of
scoring in seven successive games – during another productive season.

Frank Lampard (Chelsea FC)
The term emotional rollercoaster does not do justice to Lampard's season.
The 30-year-old became only the eighth player in Chelsea's history to score
100 goals in February, moving on to 110 by the end of a campaign riddled by
niggling injuries. He suffered the loss of his mother in April but made
himself available for the second leg of Chelsea's UEFA Champions League
semi-final against Liverpool, scoring a last-gasp penalty as the London
side won through to the final for the first time. He scored again in Moscow
as Chelsea were denied.

Paul Scholes (Manchester United FC)
For so long the inventive fulcrum of Sir Alex Ferguson's side, Salford-born
Scholes has reinvented himself in a deeper role and arguably turned in one of
the best seasons of his career. Sitting in front of the back four and
dictating the play with his incisive passing, the midfielder chalked up his
100th UEFA Champions League appearance in the semi-final first leg against
FC Barcelona. He made his most telling contribution of the campaign in the
second meeting, however, scoring the only goal of the tie.
