UNCASVILLE, Conn. (AP) - Opening and closing with record-tying 150 mph aces,
Andy Roddick beat Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 6-2 Sunday to put the United States ahead
of Austria 4-0 in a first-round Davis Cup series the Americans clinched the day
before.
Robby Ginepri was to play Stefan Koubek in the last match of the best-of-five
series. Sunday's singles matches were reduced to best-of-three sets.
Ginepri and Roddick won singles matches Friday when U.S. Open champion Roddick
broke the service speed mark of 149 mph he shared with Greg Rusedski. Twins Bob
and Mike Bryan beat Melzer and Julian Knowle in doubles Saturday.
The United States - seeking its first Davis Cup title since 1995 - will host
Sweden in the quarterfinals. The Swedes beat defending champion Australia 4-1.
The other quarterfinals are: Belarus vs. Argentina, Switzerland vs. France, and
Netherlands vs. Spain.
Roddick broke Melzer's serve to open their match Sunday. As the players
switched sides, fans began chanting ``One fifty-one! One fifty-one!'' - a
reference to the service speed they wanted to see from Roddick.
He responded by hitting his first serve of the match at 150 mph, sending the
ball bouncing into the stands. He took two bows as the crowd gave him a
standing ovation. Play was held up for a few seconds while Melzer approached
the bleachers to check on a woman who was hit in the shoulder by the ball.
After the match, Roddick spoke to the woman, apologizing and making sure she
was OK.
Roddick lost a total of just 10 points in his nine service games during the
match, finishing with 10 aces. The last came on match point. After a 150 mph
delivery was called out, Roddick hit a second serve of the same pace and made
Melzer whiff.
``His serving is huge. It's unbelievable,'' Melzer said. ``I didn't think it
was that fast. He almost killed someone in the 10th row.''
Although the match's outcome wouldn't affect the winner of the series between
the countries, Melzer took every point seriously. After one bad volley, he
swatted a a ball into the upper deck, then tossed his racket down.
When the Austrian argued a couple of calls that went against him, Roddick
smirked and muttered, ``Lighten up, huh?''
