It's safe to say Andy Roddick knows what it takes to succeed in Memphis.
There are his appearances in the finals of the Kroger St. Jude the last two
years, with a win in 2002 and runner-up in 2003.
And then there is his easy familiarity with the city and the tournament's home
at The Racquet Club.
"I got to hit on center court yesterday, I got a workout in the gym downstairs,
" Roddick said," and obviously I went to Corky's."
Obviously.
And how did the man who spent five weeks in the offseason doing nothing but
conditioning - no hitting until after Christmas - attack the Corky's menu of
smoked pork?
"Corky's is solid," Roddick said. "They come strong every single time. The
question should be, 'What don't you eat?'"
That his barbecue-gorging behavior fits just fine into his new fitness regimen
says more about the calories Roddick is burning these days than those he is
consuming.
The tournament's No. 1 seed is coming off what should have been a grueling
stretch - Australia followed by Davis Cup followed by last week's victory in
San Jose.
But the fitness work this winter has Roddick feeling fresh as he prepares to
make another run at victory in Memphis. Roddick plays tonight against Todd
Martin, one of the KSJ's most popular players over the years.
"I feel great physically and that's the most important thing with going for two
in two weeks," said Roddick, who did two-a-day workouts for five straight weeks
. "I'm definitely here trying to get a win."
For the record, he is not here trying to equal his serving performance in the
Davis Cup against Austria, when he connected on two 150-mph serves to set a new
ATP mark.
"There's a reason why that's a record - it won't get approached on a daily b
asis," Roddick said. "I probably won't come near it for awhile now."
That Howitzer of a serve is one of the many reasons why the 21-year-old Roddick
has become America's biggest tennis superstar, and why he is this tournament's
biggest draw.
His youth, his looks, his X-games personality and unbridled energy on the court
all contribute to his marketability.
But the serve, especially coming from someone without an intimidating physique
(6-2, 197), sets him apart in the world of tennis.
"We were all giggling on the sidelines," said Robby Ginepri, one of his U.S
Davis Cup teammates. "He was going for it and he wanted to break it. The whole
crowd was going, '151! 151!'"
Jurgen Melzer was the Austrian who faced Roddick in the singles match after the
record serve. Though he didn't see the 150-mph bombs, he was still awed.
"I haven't faced anything like that in my whole life," Melzer said.
For Roddick, though, setting new records with his serve is a secondary concern.
Like everyone else in the tennis world, he is trying to raise his game to meet
the brilliance of Roger Federer, who supplanted Roddick as the world's No. 1.
Federer, from Switzerland, has built an impressive lead over Roddick and Juan
Carlos Ferrero, the Spaniard at No. 3.
"He's just insanely talented," Roddick said. "It's ridiculous the shots he
can come up with. . . . His mistakes stand out because you don't expect them.
Then his winners, they just look really easy for him."
The pro tennis community in Memphis this week will tell you that Federer has
the game to dominate for the next decade.
Roddick plans to be right there with him, pushing for No. 1.
"I don't have the ability he does," Roddick said. "It shows me I have to work
even harder than him if I want to be up there."
