Rain caused suspension of top-seeded Andy Roddick's match with Dutchman John van Lottum at 9:45 p.m. Tuesday, with Roddick up a service break in the second set and with a 6-5 lead, with the score tied 30-30 in the Franklin Templeton Tennis Classic. Rain also created a 44-minute delay earlier in the match that quite likely saved Roddick from self-destruction. The world's No. 3-ranked player had gone berserk over what he felt was a bad call, but the delay allowed him to regain his composure to battle back from a 5-2 deficit to gain a pair of service breaks on a pair of unforced errors by van Lottum. The match will be completed after noon today. All seemed well with Roddick when he closed out the first set with a 138 mph ace to win 6-3. He looked to be on his way to an expected win over van Lottum, who lost 7-6 in the third set two weeks ago in Rotterdam to then-world No. 3 Juan Carlos Ferrero. Roddick lost his cool shortly thereafter. After van Lottum held service, a disputed call on break point gave van Lottum the second-game service break, and Roddick's temper erupted for about five minutes. The linesperson called van Lottum's shot long. Roddick was ready to return it but let it go, only to have chair umpire Enric Molina overrule the call. "I'm not going to argue the call because it was out by this much," Roddick said, and then proceeded to argue while holding his thumb and forefinger some four inches apart. "I would have returned the ball, but she called it out." Getting no satisfaction from Molina, Roddick summoned ATP supervisor Gayle Bradshaw, who informed him he couldn't overrule the chair's call, which set him off again. The tantrum continued and next came a penalty point for delay of game, where upon Roddick smashed his racket on the court.
