Fish to fill out U.S. Davis Cup team

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) -- Patrick McEnroe is going with youth. Mats Wilander opted for experience.
U.S. captain McEnroe selected Mardy Fish on Monday to team with Andy Roddick in singles against Wilander's older Swedish team in the Davis Cup quarterfinals April 9-11 at Delray Beach.
Fish, 22, was chosen from a pool of candidates that included Vince Spadea, 29, who upset Marat Safin at the Nasdaq-100 Open on Saturday and won the first tournament title of his career this month at Scottsdale, Ariz.
``I feel we're going with our two best young guys, our two best guns,'' McEnroe said. He acknowledged age was a factor in picking Fish for the best-of-five-set matches.
``Younger legs are something you can't ignore,'' McEnroe said.
The Swedes will be led by Thomas Enqvist, 30, and Jonas Bjorkman, 32. Their squad for the quarterfinal match also includes Joachim Johansson, Robin Soderling and Thomas Johansson.
Enqvist is expected to play singles, and Bjorkman will team with Joachim Johansson in doubles against Americans Bob and Mike Bryan.
Soderling or Bjorkman probably will fill the Swedes' other singles slot.
``My situation is the opposite of Patrick's,'' Wilander said. ``With Sweden, the young guys need the old guys to see how things are done.
``In Davis Cup you don't have to play 100 percent physical tennis. It's more mental. If there's any chance of winning a match, you want to have a guy that's strong mentally to be able to pull it out.''
Fish, 1-2 in Davis Cup singles, lost his opening match at Key Biscayne to qualifier Julien Benneteau but is ranked a career-best 17th.
Fish was chosen for the team over Spadea, Robby Ginepri, Taylor Dent and James Blake, all ranked 35th to 39th. Spadea said he had expected to be left off the team and understood McEnroe's decision.
``If I was 22 right now, maybe the decision would have been even more difficult,'' Spadea said.
McEnroe said there were factors other than age. Fish has reached five finals since March 2003, and he's 6-1 against members of the Swedish team. Spadea, in contrast, is 0-2 this year against Enqvist.
``Vince has had an incredible couple of weeks and made it very difficult for me,'' McEnroe said. ``That being said, Mardy has had the best results of anybody by far in the past year, and particularly in the past six months.''
Roddick and the Bryan brothers have become Davis Cup regulars. Roddick is No. 3 in singles and the reigning U.S. Open champion, and the Bryans are ranked No. 1 in doubles.
The Americans are seeking their first Davis Cup title since 1995.
