Scoville Jenkins Diary: Entry No. 1
by Scoville Jenkins
Saturday, August 27, 2005
Scoville Jenkins is back at the US Open for the second year in a row, and at
only 18 years old, the Atlanta native is hoping to make his mark at the
tournament this year. Jenkins will be sharing his thoughts and experiences in
a diary he's writing for USOpen.org. In his first entry, he talks about what
he's been up to since arriving in New York, how he feels about his upcoming
first-round match, and what he likes to do off the court.
Today is Arthur Ashe Kids' Day at the NTC, so I've just been out on the
grounds for most of the day signing autographs, playing with the kids, and
just having some fun. People come up to me and ask me for my autograph, but
I'm definitely not used to that yet. I still think it's pretty neat that
someone wants it. I'm done for the day with AAKD stuff, but I have to
practice in 30 minutes with my coach.
I got to New York on Thursday afternoon, and it's given me a couple of days
to get used to the grounds, the courts and the atmosphere. My dad's here with
me right now, and a lot of my friends and my dad's friends are coming to the
Open, too. My mom and sister couldn't come because school started in Atlanta
two weeks ago, but I know they'll be thinking about and watching me.
I've been practicing every day on Courts 12 and 16, but I haven't gotten into
the big stadiums yet. I'm already used to playing on the blue courts, though,
because a lot of the courts I play on have been changed to blue.
I'm feeling good when I'm hitting, and I'm ready to play. I'm friends with
some of the players, so we've been hanging out and hitting a lot and relaxing
to get ready for the Monday/Tuesday start. I practiced with Gael Monfils one
day, but mostly I practice with my coach.
Because this is my second Open, I feel a lot more relaxed this year, like I
know more what to expect and how things work. Last year I played Andy Roddick
in my first match, so whoever I play this year can't be more challenging than
that. Since the last Open, I've been playing a lot and trying to get my
ranking up and just get better. I've also been working on improving my
consistency.
It was an honor to be awarded a wild card again this year. I feel like I've
worked really hard to deserve it, and I want to show that I deserved the wild
card by having a good win here. My goal is to really come out and take it one
match at a time.
My first match is against George Bastl of Switzerland. I know him and his
playing a little bit, but my coach will prep me more by going over how George
plays and the shots he makes. I can't really watch tapes because it can be
hard to find tape on a player unless it's someone like Agassi or Roddick.
Right now I'm mostly focusing on my own game. The way I'm going into my first
match is to think about it the same way I would any other match or tournament
I've played in. I can't look at it like, it's the US Open, or I'll just
freeze up and get too nervous. I'm very happy to be here, but at the same
time I want to win.
I really look up to some of the players I'm around right now. The one I
admire the most is Andre Agassi. He's been in the game for a real long time,
and I admire everything that he's done. It's unbelievable that he's in the
best shape of his life and still playing the game.
I don't think I'll have time to do much else besides play tennis while I'm in
New York. I've gotten to see the city a little bit since I've been here, but
mostly I'm just relaxing and chilling out... reading biographies of people
and philosophy books. But I love New York. It's a great city. I love to just
walk around and look at things. Yesterday I walked around Times Square for
awhile, and it was really nice.
I'll check back in next week, and let you know how things are going after my
match.
