9/5/06 7:56 PM
Same Team Going for Fourth Consecutive Victory
Matches to be played on red clay in Moscow’s Olympic Stadium,
September 22-24
The USTA and U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe announced that world
No. 7 James Blake, world No. 10 Andy Roddick, and the world’s No. 1
doubles team of Bob and Mike Bryan will comprise the U.S. squad that will
face Russia in the semifinals of the 2006 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas on an
indoor red clay court in Moscow’s Olympic Stadium, September 22-24.
This is the fourth consecutive tie that the team of Blake, Roddick and the
Bryans has been named to represent the United States in Davis Cup – a team
that is 3-0 together.
This quartet began its Davis Cup run by defeating Belgium in the World Group
Playoff last September on clay in Leuven, Belgium. This year they defeated
Romania, 4-1, in the first round and Chile, 3-2, in the quarterfinals.
“We are looking forward to playing in the semifinals against a tough Russian
team,”said U.S. Davis Cup Captain Patrick McEnroe, who is 9-5 in the past
five year and led the U.S. to the 2004 Davis Cup Final.“It will be a challenge,
but we hope to repeat the great performance the U.S. had in the 1995 final the
last time we played on Moscow on clay.”
Led by Pete Sampras, the United States won its last Davis Cup title in 1995,
defeating Russia at the same site and on the same surface to be used this
year. Sampras won all three points in the 3-2 victory and is the last American
to win three live matches in the same Davis Cup tie.
Blake, 26, is seeded fifth this week at the US Open, his highest seeding at a
Grand Slam event as is scheduled to face Tomas Berdych in the fourth round
today. Blake won his sixth career singles title earlier this summer defeating
Roddick in the final of the US Open Series opener in Indianapolis. Blake has
an 11-6 overall record in Davis Cup (8-5 in singles; 3-1 in doubles),
having represented the United States in eight ties over the past five years.
Blake turned professional after completing his sophomore season at Harvard
as the No. 1 player in college tennis. In 2001, he became the first former
Harvard student to represent the United States in Davis Cup in 75 years.
Dwight Davis, a senior at Harvard, founded the Davis Cup competition in 1900.
Roddick, who turned 24 last week, has a 20-7 record in Davis Cup singles
matches since joining the team in 2001, which makes him sixth all-time in
singles victories for the U.S. Davis Cup team. Currently ranked No. 10 in
the world, the 2003 US Open champion will face Lleyton Hewitt in the
quarterfinals of this year’s event. Roddick swept both of his singles matches
against Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup Quarterfinals, the sixth time in his career
he won two matches in the same tie. His win over Chile’s Fernando Gonzalez
in the quarterfinals improved his record to 7-0 when given the opportunity to
clinch the tie for the United States.
Bob Bryan, 28, half of the No. 1 doubles team in the world, holds a 8-1 record
in Davis Cup doubles with twin brother Mike. The duo are the reigning men’s
doubles champions at the US Open, Australian Open and Wimbledon and have
reached the men’s doubles final at the last seven Grand Slams. The Bryan
brothers have won 31 doubles titles as a team and are the most successful
sibling doubles team in the Open era of professional tennis. Bob also won
the mixed doubles titles at the 2003 and 2004 US Open with Katarina Srebotnik
and Vera Zvonareva, respectively.
Mike Bryan, 28, has played every doubles match for the U.S. Davis Cup team
since he and his twin brother, Bob, joined the team in September 2003.
They are the only brothers to pair in victory for the United States Davis Cup
team. Together they ended 2005 as the No. 1 doubles team in the world for
the second time in three years. Mike has 34 career ATP doubles titles and won
the 2002 US Open and 2003 French Open mixed doubles titles with Lisa Raymond.
The United States leads all nations with 31 Davis Cup titles, the last coming
in 1995 begins the quest for its 32nd Davis Cup title with this best-of-five
match series in the 16-nation Davis Cup World Group.
The United States leads the series with Russia, 2-0. In addition to the epic
1995 Final, the two countries met in the 1998 First Round in Stone Mountain,
Ga... That match ended in dramatic fashion as Jim Courier rallied to win a
five-set battle against Marat Safin in the fifth and decisive match.
Robby Ginepri, a member of the 2004 U.S. Davis Cup team, was a ballboy at
the 1998 match.
Russian Davis Cup Captain Shamil Tarpischev has named No. 6 Nikolay
Davydenko, No. 25 Dmitry Tursunov, No. 54 Mikhail Youzhny and
No. 104 Marat Safin, a two-time Grand Slam champion, to the team that
will play in Moscow.
Founded in 1900, Davis Cup is the world’s largest annual international team
competition with 133 teams competing this year. The winner of the U.S. vs.
Russia tie will face the winner of the other semifinal between Argentina and
Australia in the 2006 Davis Cup Final, December 1-3.
Should the United States advance, their opponent would host the final.
AIG is the official sponsor of the U.S. Davis Cup Team.
Wilson is the official ball of the U.S. Davis Cup team.
OLN and The Tennis Channel will air same-day coverage of all three days of
competition.
