Mirnyi returned after a 2 hr., 23 min. rain delay to win the two games he needed to clinch the win against the Argentine, who would have become the new ATP Champions Race leader had he won the title. A quarterfinalist in Montreal and Washington during the past two weeks, Mirnyi reached the Hamburg semifinals last year and the Stuttgart final in 2001. Mirnyi broke Coria’s opening service game and secured later secured a second break as his serve/volley game and chip-and-charge tactics unsettled Coria. Mirnyi will next meet seventh seed and tournament favorite Andy Roddick, who is seeking back-to-back Tennis Masters Series titles after winning in Montreal last week. Roddick is 18-1 on the US hard court season and has won 28 of his past 30 matches since teaming with coach Brad Gilbert. On Friday Roddick blitzed Argentine Mariano Zabaleta 6-1, 6-2, holding serve throughout for the third straight match. Roddick has dropped serve just once this tournament (in the first round) and has dropped serve just 12 times throughout the hard court swing. In the past 15 years only two players – Gilbert and Pete Sampras – have won 20 or more matches during the hard court swing before the US Open. Roddick will hit 20 wins if he wins the title. Despite the difficult task in confronting Roddick in the semifinals, Mirnyi is looking forward to the challenge. Mirnyi said: "It's an exciting situation for me because I'm playing some of my best tennis so far, and Andy has been running so hot in the past eight, ten weeks, that I'd like to play the best player there is on Tour right now. And he's certainly one of them." Of his win against Coria, who had won 18 of his past 19 matches, Mirnyi said: "He's been playing very consistently over the last two or three months, and he's beaten many players that are not playing like myself, so I knew that I had a good chance going into the match. I knew if I made my game work today, then it was going to be a tough match for him." Roddick said: "I've always known I can win a big match in a tournament. I don't think you get to 10 in the world without winning a big match in a tournament. But I definitely feel like I've taken it up a level from Wimbledon maybe. I don't think there's a specific point. I think it's just a combination of winning matches and feeling good and working on your game. "I'm staying pretty calm out there right now, and that's allowing me to think clearly on the court and that helps. "Max is a big player. He's going to serve big, volley well. He's going to pressure me as much as he can, and it's going to be tough. He's been playing pretty well. He's quartered I think the last two weeks, and I'm just going to have to look for my opportunities to break and take care of him out there." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 218.167.185.235 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 218.167.185.235
