US Open Wild Cards Announced Michael Chang given wild card in final US Open appearance. The wild card entries for this year's US Open have been set and will include former finalist Michael Chang, along with six young Americans, the USTA announced on Thursday. Chang will be joined in the main draw by wild cards Brian Baker, Alex Bogomolov, Jr., Amer Delic, Robert Kendrick, Alex Kim, Jeff Morrison and Robert Yim. Chang, a former No. 2 in the world and 1989 Roland Garros champion, announced earlier in the year that 2003 would be his final year on the ATP circuit. He will be making his 17th straight appearance at the US Open and has compiled a 43-16 record at the event, including a finals appearance in 1996 where he lost to Pete Sampras. At only 18, Baker is working his way up the ATP Entry Rankings, currently No. 447. He turned professional this summer and won his first Futures tournament in April. Bogomolov, who last week teamed with Morrison to win a bronze medal in doubles for the United States at the Pan Am Games, has steadily worked his way close to the Top 100 in the Entry Rankings. He had his best result in an ATP event in Indianapolis, reaching the third round, and has won Challenger titles in Leon and Forest Hills. This year's NCAA men's singles champion, Delic, 21, recently won his first ATP match in Indianapolis and followed by taking Paradorn Srichaphan to three sets in the second round. He is currently ranked No. 489. Kendrick made his big splash on the ATP circuit in March, where he reached the semifinals in Delray Beach after qualifying, losing to eventual winner Jan-Michael Gambill. Kendrick qualified this week in Cincinnati for his first Tennis Masters Series event and is No. 122 in the Entry Rankings. Kim's inspired play at the Pan Am Games last week led the American to a bronze medal in singles, losing to Marcelo Rios in the semifinals. The 23-year-old has performed well at Grand Slam events, reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open in 2002 and went five sets with Mark Philippoussis in the first round at this year's Roland Garros. Morrison ended 2002 ranked No. 99, but a tear in his abdominal muscle has limited the 24-year-old to only two ATP events since April. Morrison performed well last week at the Pan Am Games, teaming with Bogomolov to capture the bronze medal in doubles. He is currently No. 200 in the ATP Entry Rankings. Yim earned his spot as a wild card by winning the USTA Boys' 18s Super National Championship. Still an amateur, the 18-year-old defeated Jamil Al-Agba in the finals in Kalamazoo. Yim made his ATP debut in late July by qualifying at Los Angeles before losing to eventual champion Wayne Ferreira in the first round. Nine additional players were awarded wild cards for US Open qualifying. Those players were: Jamil Al-Agba, Thomas Blake, Matias Boeker, Kean Feeder, KJ Hippensteel, Chris Kwon, Rajeev Ram, Bobby Reynolds and Todd Widom. The US Open begins on August 25th at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
