Thursday September 18, 03:24 AM Rested Roddick has Slovakia in his sights BRATISLAVA, Sept 17 (Reuters) - U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick says he is rested and ready for action against Slovakia in this weekend's Davis Cup World Group playoff. Less than two weeks after capturing his first grand slam title by beating Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero, the 21-year-old American told journalists in Bratislava that he is anxious to get back on the court after a short rest. "I didn't play too much tennis (since the Open). I kind of relaxed a little bit and was able to kind of get away from the game and that enabled me to come in here and focus and get ready," Roddick, currently on a 19-match winning streak, said. Roddick stormed through the draw at Flushing Meadows, but the slow red clay court at the Slovak National Tennis Centre has been built to slow his blistering ground strokes and serve. The American is 7-2 overall in Davis Cup play -- including two wins over Slovakia last year -- but those two defeats both came on clay. However, Roddick, currently first in the ATP Champions Race, says he relishes the chance of wearing his national colours no matter what the surface, a view not shared by many high-profile American players in recent years. "I think it is one of the ultimate honors in sports to be asked to participate for your country," he said. "I get along with all of these guys really well. "I think it is fun to be able to participate in something with your friends as well. It's an honor," he said. U.S. team captain Patrick McEnroe has not announced his lineup yet, but is likely to call upon Roddick and James Blake for singles action, with brothers Bob and Mike Bryan looking after the doubles rubber. Mardy Fish, Bobby Reynolds and Brian Vahaly are also in the team. Slovakia will rely heavily on seasoned tour journeymen Karol Kucera and Dominik Hrbaty. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.csie.ntu.edu.tw) ◆ From: 203.219.101.22
