Roddick to miss Japan Open
U.S. Open champion Andy Roddick has pulled out of the Japan Open later this
month because of a hamstring injury, tournament organisers said on Wednesday.
The American world number two, fined $40,000 by the ATP Tour on Monday after
withdrawing from the Bangkok Open, hurt his right hamstring during his surprise
Davis Cup defeat by Slovakian Dominik Hrbaty in Bratislava at the weekend.
"Andy had been told not to play for 10 days but we were told last night that he
does not want to risk making the injury worse," Japan Open spokeswoman Atsuko
Isoyama said.
Roddick, who won his first grand slam at Flushing Meadows earlier this month,
aggravated the injury during his decisive victory over Karol Beck on Sunday.
He was fined after failing to inform Thai organisers of his decision to pull
out of the Bangkok Open until Monday morning.
Australian Open finalist Rainer Schuettler of Germany will replace Roddick
as top seed at the Japan Open, which takes place in Tokyo from September 29 to
October 5.
