Andy TMS Paris賽後訪問 (Semifinal)
11/1/2003 --
Tim Henamn def. Andy Roddick 7-6(7-4) 7-6(9-7)
THE MODERATOR: Questions for Andy, please.
Q. Bad luck, Andy. You've always spoken about Tim Henman with a lot of respect.
Is that why?
Andy Roddick: Yeah, I mean, he played great tennis today. Look at the players
he's beaten this week, it's pretty impressive. You know, I felt like I was in
the match the whole way. I was this close to getting the upper hand. But he
came up with the goods. So, you know, well done.
Q. Did you think you needed to serve just a little bit more consistently?
Andy Roddick: Yeah, yeah. Absolutely. Especially against someone like Tim who
puts a lot of returns in play and puts a lot of pressure on you off the return.
You know, maybe my serving days from the last couple of days would have been
better used today. But that's the way it goes. You can't, you know, do
everything you want to do every day. He took advantage of it. And he played the
big points a lot better than I did today.
Q. Are there many people who actually put you into bat, so to speak, give you
the first choice to serve? He won the toss and put you in to serve. There
aren't many who would do that.
Andy Roddick: No, you'd be surprised.
Q. Really?
Andy Roddick: Yeah. I mean, as well as Tim played, the first game was a little
cheesy, to be honest. I missed -- he got a little let cord and all that stuff.
But that definitely doesn't take away from the fact that he played well today.
I mean, even in the second set breaker, I thought I played a pretty good
breaker the whole way through. You know, he just outplayed me, so... You know,
that happens when you're playing against the best day in and day out.
Q. But you'll look back on a satisfactory week, would you say, going into
Houston?
Andy Roddick: Yeah. I mean, obviously I was hoping for more and I could have
definitely put a, you know, lot of pressure on some other guys if I would have
gotten a couple more rounds or won here. But I haven't been No. 1 before and I
got that this week. I put in a semifinal when I hadn't really played well on
this swing of things before. So, you know, there are definitely some positives
and that's what I'll try to take into Houston.
Q. Do you feel tired at the end of this year?
Andy Roddick: Tired?
Q. Yeah.
Andy Roddick: No, man. You know, I'm too hyper to feel tired (laughing). No, I
feel all right.
Q. I mean, I don't speak perfect English, but I mean...
Andy Roddick: I don't either (laughter).
Q. You see what I mean, little bit... Not physically tired, but it's a long
way.
Andy Roddick: I definitely think it's a long season, you know. I think we have
the smallest off-season of any sport. I've always said that. I think a lot of
players will tell you that. But, you know, that's the nature of tennis, and I'm
not the one making decisions. So, therefore, you play when you have to. The
last thing I'm gonna do is complain about what I do. So, you know... I'm pretty
lucky to play tennis. If that means playing a long season, then that means
playing a long season.
Q. What are you going to do in the few days that come before Houston?
Andy Roddick: Before Houston I'll just train, try to get into the gym a little
bit. Make sure I'm healthy, ready to go for Houston. I don't think I'm gonna
get there too early to deal with everything that's there. But maybe just kind
of relax and, you know, try to... Nothing really out of the ordinary, you know.
Just a normal week of practice I think.
Q. Tim came here and he said straightaway that he was playing without pressure
this week. He was just trying to end the season on a good note and prepare for
next year. Of course, he has played so well this week, but he's 29 years old.
We British reporters, particularly, are looking at him now like he's getting to
be an old stager with not a lot of good years left. Do you think we should be
shot for thinking that?
Andy Roddick: Oh, to be shot?
Q. Yes.
Andy Roddick: Well, I don't think you should be shot for anything, personally
(laughter). You know, you cheeky British guys are okay by me (smiling). No, but
obviously, you know, it's tough when -- I mean, people were panicking on Andre
and Pete when they were 27 and look what they've done since then, you know? I
mean, you never know. Maybe he only has three years left, but maybe those will
be his best three years; you never know. It's gonna be interesting because
Tim's a much better player to not have any Masters Series or Grand Slam titles.
So, you know, hopefully -- or not hopefully, but it would be kind of nice if he
got one of those. I definitely think his level of play deserves it.
Q. Is that the best he's played against you? I know he beat you this year in
Washington. But is that the best he's played against you?
Andy Roddick: I mean, probably, yeah. I mean, I think it's the best he's played
the big points. It's kind of tough. In Washington he played a flawless tiebreaker
as well, in the third set. So, you know, he played well there but I kind of let
him back -- I was kind of cruising. I won the first set pretty easily and kind
of played a sloppy game in the second. Today I didn't really play many sloppy
games and he just got the better of me. So I'd say yeah.
Q. You're very complimentary about Tim and his style of play. Do you actively
prefer to play that kind of player rather than, say, a baseliner?
Andy Roddick: You know, it just depends 'cause, I mean, I used to not like
playing serve-and-volleyers. But with the summer and the way I've been playing
lately, I beat a bunch of good serve-and-volleyers. I think it just depends on
the day and how somebody plays rather than their style of play. If someone's
playing great baseline tennis, then obviously it's tough to beat them. I think
that's the way it goes with professional tennis. It doesn't really matter -- I
mean, obviously it does. But I think it matters more how confident they are in
the way they're playing rather than the style of play that they have. With Tim,
he played very well today. He got a lot of serves back. He, you know, stuck to
his guns, played aggressive. That's what won him the match today.
