很高興聽到練習訓練一切正常 辛苦Andy了 下星期的master cup請大加油 好籤表+最愛休士頓+室外硬地+主場球迷 就差你囉 Boca Raton's Roddick living the high life Andy Roddick seems to be enjoying the view from atop the world BY MICHELLE KAUFMAN HE'S HAD ENOUGH: "No more, 'What's it feel like to be the future of American tennis?' [stuff]. No more!" says Andy Roddick. Andy Roddick seems to be enjoying the view from atop the world. It's a place he feels comfortable, a place he sought out long before winning the U.S. Open or claiming the No. 1 world tennis ranking. In fact, Roddick has been sky-high on a regular basis for more than a year, since he began jumping out of airplane s at 11,000 feet and floating to Earth strapped to a parachute. ''A good rush,'' is how he describes skydiving, and he is ready to try it solo, without an instructor, the next time out. But for now, the 21-year-old Boca Raton resident is soaring and doesn't appear ready to free fall anytime soon. Asked how the family's life has been affected by the youngest son's success, Blanche Roddick replied: ``We haven't really landed yet.'' Roddick is the hottest thing in tennis heading into the year-ending Master's Cup in Houston, today through Nov. 16. He is 47-4 since the French Open and has added $2.89 million to his bankroll this season. He gallivants around the globe with pop star girlfriend Mandy Moore. He appears shirtless in Rolling Stone, opens stock markets, receives keys to cities and struts down a Saks Fifth Avenu e runway wearing Arnold Brant's latest fashions. Last night, he received the u ltimate confirmation of his arrival on the pop culture scene . . . ``Live! From New York! It's Saturday Night!'' Roddick hosted Saturday Night Live, the first male tennis player to do so (Chris Evert did the honors in 1989), and the musical guest just so happened to be his favorite group, the Dave Matthews Band. The SNL experience followed appe arances on the Today show, Regis and Kelly show, MTV and the Late Show with David Letterman. As if that wasn't enough exposure, Roddick will be the subject of a reality TV show called The Tour next summer, a gig Roddick said he is ''totally amped'' about. Cameras will follow Roddick on tour from May to September, and he is giv ing them complete access with one exception -- ``my bedroom.'' KING OF COURT Despite the demands on his time, and cameras at every turn, Roddick has not lost his edge on the court, says his coach of six months, Brad Gilbert. Last week, Roddick trained at Flushing Meadows by day and rehearsed with the Saturda y Night Live cast at night. He spends an average of two hours on the court, two hours in the gym and does ''hundreds'' of sit-ups per day, Gilbert said. ''It's been more hectic than usual, for sure, but I don't think Andy's training has been affected,'' Gilbert said. 'He's 21 years old. He has an abundance of energy. It's a balancing act, and it's OK to do some of that other stuff, as long as you learn to say `no' sometimes.'' oddick has been saying 'no' a lot lately. He has been so swamped that he spent less than 48 hours at home in Boca Raton since the emotional U.S. Open victory on Sept. 8. Blanche Roddick said she saw him for five hours before he went to Europe in mid-September, then on Thursday, when he swooped into town for a half -day to receive the key to Boca Raton and participate in a charity fashion show. ALL IN THE FAMILY Roddick's parents have been inundated with calls, cards and e-mails of congratu lations. They have heard from old neighbors, long-lost friends and relatives an d even a former college professor from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. A friend in Israel sent the story of Roddick's victory from a Hebrew language newspaper. A friend serving in the military in Iraq sent a note. ''We have so much incredible pride in what Andy has done, and it is embellished every day when we realize just how many people have enjoyed the ride along with him,'' Blanche Roddick said. ``The way he won, with such sincerity, really seem ed to touch people. It's been a wonderful time for all of us.'' Nobody in the Roddick family is completely surprised to see Andy at the pinnacl e of his sport. When he was 7, his Christmas present to each member of the fami ly was an autographed tennis ball. ''I still have them,'' Blanche Roddick said. 'And it's almost creepy because he signed those balls exactly the way he does now, `Andy R.'He was just learning cursive back when he wrote those, and he talked about being the best tennis player in the world. But we never really expected it would happen.'' Roddick's oldest brother, Lawrence, was an All-American diver and U.S. teammate of Greg Louganis. His other brother, John, was the first tennis prodigy in the family and made it as far as All-American at the University of Georgia. The fami ily moved from Austin to Boca Raton so John could polish his game. But it was ''Little Roddick,'' as Andy was known then, who would make it to the pros. He had a 9-inch growth spurt at 16, dominated the junior circuit and turn ed pro at 18. His ranking rose from No. 325 to No. 27 in one year, and he was anointed ``Next Great American.'' ON THE RISE Roddick would spend the next two years trying to live up to expectations, answe ring questions about whether he was worthy of taking the baton from Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras. When he finally won the U.S. Open, his first words at the news conference were: 'No more, `What's it feel like to be the future of American tennis?' [stuff]. No more!'' Roddick is the man to beat now. The present of American tennis. His last goal for the season is finishing at the top. All he has to do is finish better than Juan Carlos Ferrero at the Master's Cup. ''I'm excited for it,'' Roddick said last week. ``You know, I think it's luck of the draw that the first time I'm participating in it, it's the first time it's been in the States since I think '89. So obviously I feel pretty lucky. It's in Houston, which is one of my favorite places to play. I'm looking forward to it.'' When the season is complete, Gilbert said, the real hard work will begin. Roddick is determined to better all parts of his game, even his overpowering serve. But for now, he'll just float a little longer. No need to touch down just yet. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 61.231.98.53 ※ 編輯: carillon 來自: 61.231.98.53 (11/10 01:47)
