Morientes Passes Medical and Completes Move to Valencia
Fernando Morientes completed a move from Liverpool to Valencia on Wednesday
after passing a medical at the Mestalla.
The former Spain international signed a three year deal for a reported fee of
耶 million after failing to find his niche in his year and a half at Anfield.
The 30-year-old struggled in the Premiership, scoring just 12 goals in 61
appearances for the Merseysiders, leaving manager Rafa Benitez with little
option but to offload his compatriot.
His arrival in Valencia will have fans' mouths watering at the prospect of a
Morientes-David Villa strike force, after Villa netted 25 times last season
in la Liga.
"I'm keen to get started because this is a new start, a new team and a new
city," Morientes said. "I want to help win a trophy for the club and its
fans."
"My original intention was to stay at Liverpool, but there was a new
opportunity and I had to think it over," said Morientes.
"The dilemma was whether to stay or leave and it all happened very quickly
and now I've got the chance to play for a great club."
The arrival of Morientes will probably signal the departure of striker
Patrick Kluivert, who failed to make his mark in Spain last season after a
series of injuries saw the Dutchman spend most of his time on the bench.
Italian trio Marco Di Vaio, Bernardo Corradi and Stefano Fiore as well as
Spanish midfielder Francisco Rufete were also omitted from the squad as they
too are deemed expendable by coach Quique Sanchez Flores.
"They will all start training later and during the intervening period they
will be given time to look for another team," Sanchez Flores said.
