Mir arrested on suspicion of alleged sexual assault
3 September 2024
Valencia's former Wolves striker Rafa Mir has been arrested on suspicion
of sexual assault, Spanish police said on Tuesday.
His club said that they were "aware" of 27-year-old Mir's arrest and BBC
Sport understands Mir was not present at a training session on Tuesday.
"He is under arrest for alleged sexual assault," a spokesperson for
Spain's Civil Guard police force told the AFP news agency.
Reports of the player's arrest had emerged in Spanish media earlier on
Tuesday.
In a statement posted on the club's website, Valencia added: "In relation
to the press reports that have appeared regarding the arrest of Valencia
CF player Rafa Mir, the Club is aware of said arrest and, in the absence
of details about it, for the moment it can only state that it will
cooperate in everything that justice may require."
The striker moved to Wolves from Valencia in 2018, but played only four
times for the club. He joined Sevilla in 2021 following loan spells at
Nottingham Forest, Las Palmas and Huesca during his time at Wolves.
Mir returned to Valencia on loan in July.

Valencia forward Rafa Mir apologises to fans after sexual assault
allegations, defends innocence
By Ruairidh Barlow - 9 September 2024, 12:27
Valencia striker Rafa Mir has broken his silence on accusations of sexual
assault against him and companion, but has declared that the claims are
unfounded. Mir spent two nights in police custody before giving a
statement and being given bail.
Details of the incident have emerged, with Mir reportedly telling the
court that while he did see one of the alleged victims was injured and
bleeding, 'it was nothing more than a scratch.' Mir apologised for
breaking the curfew for Valencia players, and said he would be dedicating
all of his energy to helping the club and the team. Following on from his
lawyer, Mir defended his innocence again, as recounted by MD.
Since, Relevo have reported that Mir will be sanctioned by Valencia, but
not sacked, the latter adhering to a lack of a legal basis to do so, but
also the presumption of innocence. Mir will be fined for breaking the team
curfew and ordered to train alone until Ruben Baraja sees fit to
reintegrate him. Diario AS say that Mir will only miss a week of group
training, and two games against Girona and Atletico Madrid.
The incident occurred on a Saturday night going into Sunday morning after
Valencia's 1-1 draw with Villarreal before the international break, with
Mir attending a nightclub before leaving for a property where the alleged
incident occurred. The 27-year-old returned to his boyhood club on loan
from Sevilla this summer with an option for Los Che to buy.
Full Statement:
After a period of reflection, I want to make my innocence clear,
reiterating the content of the statement issued by my lawyer Jaime
Campaner. As soon as he was able to get to work on equal terms with the
accusations, the case has taken an important turn that shows what
unfounded that the complaint is.
I fully trust the Administration of Justice of this country, with which I
have collaborated from the first minute to clarify the facts.
For all this, I want to express my most sincere and deep apologies to my
Club, Valencia CF, to the coaching staff, to my teammates and mainly to
the Valencia fans, for failing to comply, even on a day off, with the
established schedules that are expected of a professional and even more so
after a start to the season far from our expectations. From now on, as a
professional footballer, all my energies are focused on helping my club
and my teammates.
I don't want to forget to thank my family for the love and support they
have shown me at all times. Your love and the truth will make me overcome
this traumatic situation that I am experiencing.
That being said, following the advice of my lawyer, we will work in the
courts and not in the media or on social networks.

Valencia to sideline Rafa Mir over sexual assault allegations
Reuters - Sep 9, 2024, 03:11 PM
Valencia have begun disciplinary proceedings against their forward Rafa
Mir after the 27-year-old player was arrested last week by the Spanish
Guardia Civil police for an alleged crime of sexual assault, the club said
on Monday.
While not officially disclosing the details of the disciplinary measures,
club sources told Reuters the striker will be fined and removed from the
rest of the group for an indeterminate period of time.
"Valencia wish to reiterate the club's firm condemnation of any violence
in any form, while respecting the presumption of innocence that our legal
system promulgates," the club said in statement.
"The justice system must decide the course of action regarding the
allegations for which Rafa Mir is being investigated.
"However, as far as the club is concerned, and within the framework of its
competences, we have analysed the situation and decided to undertake
disciplinary measures.
"Specifically, the club will proceed to open a case against Rafa Mir as we
feel his way of behaving, in his time off, indisputably affects the
professional performance expected of him as a player of this club,
damaging, in addition, the confidence that our fans have in all of the
players.
"The club will continue to collaborate with the police in whatever way
required."
Earlier on Monday, Mir denied having committed sexual assault and
apologised for "failing to comply, even on a day off, with the rigorous
timetable expected of a professional and even more so after a start to the
season that fell short of our expectations."
Mir, who has also played for Wolves and Sevilla, was arrested last week
after a woman filed a complaint against him, and he testified before a
judge on Wednesday.
The judge who ordered his conditional release will now lead an
investigation to establish whether there is enough evidence for Mir to
stand trial or if the case should be dropped.
Mir will have to appear in court regularly and is not allowed to leave the
country.

Rafa Mir reunited with Valencia teammates for first time since revelation
of sexual assault allegations
By John Menzies - 18 September 2024, 17:19
Earlier this month, Valencia striker Rafa Mir was arrested on suspicion of
sexual assault. He remained in police custody for a couple of days before
being released, although a case has been opened, and a formal
investigation is underway.
Valencia have also been looking into the matter, and while this goes on,
Mir has been excluded from first team affairs. He has not been training
with his teammates, and head coach Ruben Baraja does not have him
available for any matchdays – this will continue into next week at least.
However, Mir's “exile” has been put on hold for an afternoon at least.
As per Radio Valencia Cadena SER (via Diario AS), he was present at a
first team lunch on Wednesday, with this event being used to boost morale
after a very difficult start to the season for Valencia.
Mir's situation remains very open, and there is currently no indication as
to when any of the aforementioned investigations will be complete.

Investigating Judge in Rafa Mir’s alleged sexual assault case sees
testimony as 'vague and generic'
By Ruairidh Barlow - 21 September 2024, 5:25
Valencia forward Rafa Mir is currently under investigation for an alleged
sexual assault, after a case was brought against him two weeks ago. He is
currently serving an internal suspension from the club of a week in
isolated training and two games, following a fine too.
According to the first edict on the case, Rafa Mir's testimony is
described as 'vague, generic and unspecific', report Relevo. On the other
hand, the victim's story has been qualified as 'coherent and firm' in
their accusations. The document is part of the case that will lead up to
it being brought to court, and the investigation is directed by an
investigating magistrate, before being heard.
Mir could face a punishment of one to five years if found guilty of sexual
assault, although he has defended his innocence. Mir has been heavily
criticised by teammate Pepelu and manager Ruben Baraja for his conduct,
although thus far he has only been punished for breaking team curfew laws.
