Mercury Sign Olympian and All-Star Guard Nikki McCray

The Phoenix Mercury announced today the signing of two-time Olympian and three-time All-Star Nikki McCray. McCray, a 5’11” guard, spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the Indiana Fever after a four-year career with the Washington Mystics.
“Nikki McCray is another tremendous player to add to our growing roster,” said Mercury General Manager Seth Sulka. “When you take a look at what she’s done for the WNBA and the game of basketball, you really find that she is a true talent with the ability to really impact this team.”
Originally signed by the WNBA and assigned to the Washington Mystics on January 27, 1998, McCray spent three seasons in the capitol city where she was twice named to the WNBA All-Star Team (1999, 2000). The 1995 Tennessee grad was then traded to the Indiana Fever on December 5, 2001. Another stellar season with the Fever in 2001, McCray was again named a WNBA All-Star. Lifetime, McCray is averaging 12.7 points, 2.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. The Collierville, Tennessee native has career shooting
percentages of .418 (854-2,043) from the field and .772 (544-705) from the free throw line.
Entering her seventh WNBA season, McCray is ranked among the Top 20 WNBA leaders in a variety of statistical categories: 10th in total points (2,421), 10th in free throws made (544), 13th in field goals made (854), 14th in minutes played (5,678), 16th in assists (419) and 20th in points per game (12.7 ppg).
“This is a tremendous opportunity to come in to a young team and play the role of the veteran,” said McCray. “I look forward to setting examples for these young players and to help the Mercury succeed as a team.”
The Mercury begin the 2004 season at home on Thursday, May 20, when they host the Sacramento Monarchs at 7 p.m. inside America West Arena.
