Tamika Whitmore joins L.A. Forward Tamika Whitmore rejoins former Liberty teammate Teresa Weatherspoon as the latest free agent to sign with the L.A. Sparks. Waive Bjorklund, Enghusen, Johnson and McCain Sparks Sign Veteran Forward Tamika Whitmore El SEGUNDO, CA, May 4 – The Los Angeles Sparks have signed veteran forward Tamika Whitmore, it was announced today by Sparks General Manager, Penny Toler. Veterans Tamecka Dixon, Mwadi Mabika and Nikki Teasley also joined training camp this week. Whitmore, a 6-2 forward, started 29 of 33 games last season averaging 8.2 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. She averaged 8.9 ppg and 3.6 rpg during her five seasons with the New York Liberty. In related roster moves, Los Angeles waived center Tera Bjorkland, center Cori Enghusen, center Chandra Johnson and guard Brandi McCain from the 2004 Training Camp Roster. Johnson a 6’3” center from Wisconsin Green-Bay joined the Sparks as a free agent in 2003, averaging .8 ppg and .8 rpg in 5.6 minutes per game. She played a career high 15 minutes, versus the Connecticut Sun (7/20/03), grabbing 4 rebounds and 1 assist. McCain, a 5-3 guard from the University of Florida (2002) was selected by the Cleveland Rockers in the second round (24th overall) of the WNBA Draft in 2002. Averaging 12.6 mpg in 31 games played, McCain shot .75 percent from the charity stripe and posted 41 assists on the season. Named All-SEC Second-Team following her senior year at Florida, McCain averaged 15.9 ppg, 4-9 apg, and 3.7 rpg during her 2001-02 campaign with the Gators. Bjorklund, a 6’4” center from the University of Colorado, was voted an AP All-American honorable mention in 2004 and First Team All Big 12 in 2004 and 2003. Enghusen, a 6’6” center, averaged 3.8 ppg and 2.5 rpg during her four years at Stanford. As a senior she led the Pac 10 in blocked shots with 1.66 bpg. The Sparks active training camp roster now stands at 15, just at the League mandated 15 person roster cut-down. Newcomers Laura Macchi and Rafaella Masciadri currently completing overseas commitments and are expected to report to training camp in early May. The Sparks open the pre-season Saturday, May 8, 2004 at 7 p.m. vs. the New York Liberty at the Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State University.
