Detroit and Los Angeles: Finals Revisited
The Detroit Shock and Los Angeles Sparks gave us
a classic WNBA Finals in 2003, with Detroit pulling
it out at home in Game 3. The Detroit-Los Angeles rivalry
is renewed once again this week as the Pistons and Lakers
pick up the flag and battle it out for the 2004 NBA title.
L.A. Sparks on the Lakers
Lisa Leslie
"L.A. in five games because it’s our destiny to win.
… We’re champions and that’s what champions do, win.
I think it’s the Lakers' and Sparks' year to regain our
titles. What better place is there for the Lakers to
(reclaim) their championship than Detroit? And then the
Sparks will come right behind them and do the same.
Karl Malone is definitely the X-factor just simply
because his defense is amazing and I think that he
does a great job shutting down the power forwards.
And Rasheed Wallace is the X-factor for Detroit.
I think that Karl Malone, even if he gets his numbers,
it’ll be tough numbers. And Karl can really shut Rasheed down."
DeLisha Milton-Jones
"The Lakers will have to come to play. Flat out.
It’s championship time. They don’t have the luxury
of showing up in the third quarter like they tend to
do sometimes. They have to come hard, starting at
shootaround. The Lakers can definitely take the series
in five. This is old hand to them. They have the playoff
experience and they won’t give Detroit a chance to get
in the running. I think Kareem Rush is the one to watch.
Most people have been sleeping on Kareem for a while now
and he’s dangerous with the three. He shoots the three
like it’s a layup."
Tamecka Dixon
"I don’t think that Detroit has anyone that can
stop Shaquille O'Neal. I think Ben Wallace can do a
decent job, but they don’t have anyone that can match
what Shaq is going to do offensively, and Kobe Bryant
is a whole other scoring factor that Detroit will
have a hard time containing. Even though Detroit plays
pretty good defense, I just don’t think they’ll be
able to stop the Shaq and Kobe factor. The Lakers will
take the series in six games."
Nikki Teasley
"Of course, I have to go with the Lakers, but it will
be tough. Detroit is so strong defensively and even
though Ben Wallace is smaller than Shaq, he is the
only one that can match Shaq strengthwise in the league.
Rasheed on the outside will be hard for Karl Malone to
guard. Kobe Bryant is definitely the X-factor for L.A.
and I think Rip Hamilton for Detroit. How well they
play and how consistent they both are will be key
throughout the series. But I think the Lakers will
pull it out in five games."
Detroit Shock on the Pistons
Cheryl Ford, on her father, Karl Malone, to the
Detroit News:
“I’m real excited for him. ... I love my Pistons.
They’re my boys. But I love my dad and blood’s
thicker than water. I want my Dad to get his ring.
He deserves it. ... I congratulated him after they
won the Western Conference title, and he said, ‘And?’
And I said, 'I can’t wait until I see you,' and he
said, ‘And?’ And I said, 'I can’t wait until you
get your ring.' That’s what he was waiting for.”
Iciss Tillis
"I think the Pistons have a chance. They are doing
great and their defense is awesome. They should give
Los Angeles a great deal of trouble because their
defense is very structured and they have all sorts
of weapons on the offensive end. I think the series
will go down to seven games with the Pistons winning."
Barb Farris
"I think the first game is important. It will be
interesting to see how the Pistons match up against
the Lakers. I think the difference is that the
Pistons have centers that are more of an offensive
threat, whereas, other teams just try and foul Shaq
and use their bodies for fouls. The Piston big men
are offensive minded and they still have the fouls
to use on Shaq. We just have to hope that Shaq is
not shooting with a high percentage and then Rip
is playing with a lot of confidence. And hopefully
Tayshaun can get a little bit easier of matchup
and his offense will come back around because
Tayshaun's defense is always good. I think that the
first game will just hush everyone up because a
lot of people just think that the Lakers are going
to sweep us. I think it will be a very competitive
and interesting series and regardless of who wins it
will come down to the wire."
Ruth Riley
"I think the Pistons have a great chance. They are
a great team and are one of the better defensive
teams and the thing to remember is that anything
can happen in the Finals. As far as my prediction,
I will go with the Pistons in seven."
