AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Furthering the theory that
expanding the WNBA fan base is all about exposure
comes this little gem from popular Detroit Pistons
president Joe Dumars: He came away from the
championship series opener on Thursday with a new favorite player.
Yolanda Griffith.
Dumars, the former Pistons great and all-around
good guy, emerged from his office at the club's
facility on Thursday and sought out an old
acquaintance -- mainly to chat enthusiastically
and inquire about the opponent's veteran center.
Where is she from? How long has she been in the
league? Has she always been such a ferocious competitor?
"I absolutely could not take my eyes off her," Dumars
said. "I was sitting there in the suite talking to
(Pistons executive) John (Hammond) during the game,
and I kept saying, 'Look at her, just look at her.'
Her arms are longer than mine. I hadn't known that
much about her before because, frankly, she plays on
the West Coast and there aren't a lot of games on
television. And I had never had the opportunity to
study her in person. But I left the building thinking
she is really incredible.
"Her length, her will, her quickness around the basket.
They (Monarchs) had other players perform really well,
but I could not stop watching Griffith. I told John, 'I
have a new favorite WNBA player.' "
Told that Griffith was 36 years old, with two bum knees
and swollen knuckles on both hands, he smiled and shook his head.
"She's 36?" continued Dumars, who will be inducted into
basketball's Hall of Fame next Friday. "Someone said to
me during the game, 'You should have seen her five years ago.'
I would like to have seen that."
我也想說 'You should have seen her five years ago.'
