McRae will not drive for Subaru
From RallyLive
Scotland's 1995 world rally champion Colin McRae admitted to never
having been more disappointed during his career when told he would
not after all get a drive with Subaru for next season.
Prodrive is the team that prepares and manages Subaru's activities
in the World Rally Championship.
It seems that Prodrive wanted to have McRae in the team to replace
Richard Burns but Subaru decided otherwise.
The 35-year-old said he had been really hoping for a competitive
drive that would allow him to challenge for the title and had thought
he was in with a real chance of returning to the team where he won the
title and replacing bitter rival Richard Burns, who has a brain tumour.
"I've never been more disappointed in my entire time in the championship,"
said McRae to Autosport. "This deal was not about the money,
it was about me being in a team that could have given me one more crack at
the World Rally Championship. Subaru could have had a cracking team with
Petter (Solberg is the 2003 World Champion) and myself."
The decision will probably mean McRae - who was dropped by Citroen
at the end of the last campaign - missing out on a drive for the
season and his only planned competition is
with Nissan in the trans-Saharan Dakar Rally.
World Rally commercial boss David Richards, whose company runs
the Subaru team, said he was disappointed not to have McRae in the
series. "Some sports have iconic figures and Colin is one of them,"
Richards said. "It was Colin that helped put Subaru on the map.
I don't think some people understand the impact of not having him in the car."
The British press believes that 23-year-old Finn Mikko Hirvonen is
the favourite to be named in the Subaru team when an announcement was
made next week. Burns was to have joined Subaru from Peugeot but was
advised to sit out next season after a brain scan last month revealed
he was suffering from a brain tumour. The Briton had been admitted to
hospital for tests after fainting at the wheel of his Porsche driving
to the Rally of Great Britain.
