There's also a chance that Mark Buehrle's start on Saturday could be his last trip to the mound for 2006. That particular decision remains up to Buehrle, who is scheduled to start Friday's series opener in the Metrodome. "I will ask him how he feel, but we already have a Plan B for that start, just in case," Guillen said. "In the meanwhile, we have to know the next couple of days. The same with Freddy [Garcia on Saturday]. "If [they] want to start, [they] will start. It's up to my pitchers." Brandon McCarthy serves as Plan B for Contreras, who won't test his strained right hamstring with the team all but eliminated from postseason contention. McCarthy is scheduled to make his second start of the season on Wednesday at Jacobs Field, opposed by the Indians' Fausto Carmona. If Buehrle does not make his 33rd and final start, it will be knuckleballer Charlie Haeger working in his place. Haeger dazzled Mariners hitters in relief of Buehrle on Saturday, retiring all 10 hitters he faced, while striking out five. Haeger has not been told anything directly about the possibility for a second start, but he could be ready at a moment's notice. "They can let me know one day before, and I think I'll be all right," said Haeger with a smile. "It would be great. Obviously, I would just try to go out and throw strikes. "That's my key, throw strikes early and show I can command it early. I can get some early swings and try to keep my pitch count down." More on Buehrle: It would be inaccurate and somewhat unfair to call Buehrle's season as a whole a huge disappointment. But since being named as an All-Star for the third time on July 2, Buehrle's performance has taken a precipitous dip. According to White Sox athletic trainer Herm Schneider and Buehrle, as told to Guillen, there's nothing physically wrong with the left-hander. But Buehrle's 3-7 record and 6.44 ERA in the season's second half certainly indicates the southpaw has not been at a peak level of performance. Entering Sunday's contest, Buehrle leads the Majors with 247 hits allowed in 204 innings and is tied with Minnesota's Carlos Silva for the most home runs given up, at 36. Yet, even with these documented struggles, Guillen has not lost an ounce of confidence in Buehrle. "I love this kid," said Guillen. "I feel sick, because people don't appreciate what he's done and how good he has been for this organization." Hamstrung: The hamstring problem that has caused Contreras to collapse in a heap on the field during each of his last two starts is nothing too serious, according to Schneider. It's also hard to explain a specific cause for the problem. "I don't think I can put a finger on that, maybe fatigue," Schneider said. "Let him rest. He's just getting older." Guillen believes that his workaholic pitcher needs to take a break every now and then from his extensive daily routine. But he also believes Contreras' bout with sciatica, putting him on the disabled list in early May, might have affected his second-half effort more than originally thought. "Jose is the type of guy who always wants to do good," said Guillen of Contreras, who finished with a 13-9 record and 4.20 ERA after starting the season with nine straight wins. "He feels like he takes advantage of people when he doesn't do good. "That's why, sometimes, you have to work. Sometimes, you have to slow down a little bit." Medical center: On-going back concerns for first baseman Paul Konerko and third baseman Joe Crede will necessitate further attention during the upcoming offseason. "He's just got to go on a back program," said Schneider of Konerko. "We have a lot of guys who just need to go on back programs. "Crede will have to make some decisions," added Schneider. He could opt for minor, outpatient back surgery. "He knows what he's up against. I think it's between the powers that be [as] to what comes of that with him. I don't know. He knows the cards that have been dealt. I'm going to have to be told what to do. And go from there, but he knows all the options." The people in the stands: Sunday's crowd produced a new single-season attendance record at U.S. Cellular Field, putting the White Sox over 2.93 million fans. Guillen tipped his cap to the support for his team, especially the backing shown during the past week's struggles. "I heard some boos, but they have the right to boo and cheer," Guillen said. "Especially last night, after we were down five runs, all of a sudden we came back. I don't know if they were excited because they spent a couple of hours waiting for the game. "But it was something fun, because most of the people left, especially with the way we were playing and it was raining, a lot of people left. [The remaining fans] stayed down there and kept supporting the ballclub. "With the Dan Ryan, coming to the ballpark, it's a lot of noise, a lot of traffic here," Guillen added. "The White Sox should appreciate the support we have from them. Hopefully, we continue to be supported by them, because it's all about them." Up next: The final week of the 2006 regular season begins with Jon Garland (17-6, 4.37) on the mound at Jacobs Field. Garland will try to match his single-season career-high in victories, set in 2005, and will go against Cleveland lefty Cliff Lee (12-11, 4.58). Garland's 35 wins over the past two years are the most in the American League and rank second in the Majors to St. Louis' Chris Carpenter (36).
