The other nations moving into the next round were the United States, Austria, Russia, Argentina, Spain and Belgium. Italy and the Czech Republic will finish their tie on Monday due to rain. France d. Germany, 5-0 The defending champions wasted no time reached the quarterfinals as Amelie Mauresmo picked up two victories in singles in a 5-0 sweep of Germany. Nathalie Dechy and Emilie Loit were also victorious in their singles matches and the team of Dechy and Mauresmo completed the sweep with a straight sets victory in doubles. United States d. Slovenia, 4-1 Lisa Raymond, who dropped her first match to Tina Pisnik on Saturday, avoided a second day scare - recovering from a one set deficit to defeat Katarina Srebotnik to clinch the tie for the United States in Slovenia. Venus Williams went 2-0 in singles, while Raymond teammed with Martina Navratilova to win the doubles match. Austria d. Slovak Republic, 3-2 Austria won its first three singles matches to defeat the 2002 Fed Cup champions, the Slovak Republic. Led by a pair of victories from Barbara Schett and one from Barbara Schwartz, the Austrians moved into the quarterfinals. The Slovak Republican squad were able to win both dead rubbers in singles and doubles. Russia d. Australia, 4-1 Vera Zvonareva clinched the tie for Russia with a straight sets victory against Samantha Stosur on Sunday in Moscow. The Russians had gone 2-0 on the first day of action, but had a setback when Alicia Molik pulled off a surprising victory against Anastasia Myskina in the third rubber. The strong doubles pairing of Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Likhovtseva finished off the tie with a three-set victory against Molik and Rennae Stubbs. Argentina d. Japan, 4-1 The Argentines wrapped up the tie on home soil when Ai Sugiyama was forced to retire in the fourth rubber with leg cramps in her match with Paola Suarez. Argentina had won the first two rubbers, while Akiko Morigami was able to win a dead singles rubber against Gisela Dulko. Spain d. Switzerland, 3-2 The doubles team of Conchita Martinez and Virginia Ruano Pascual advanced Spain into the quarterfinals with a straight sets victory against Switzerland's Myriam Casanova and Emmanuelle Gagliardi. Martinez won both of her singles matches, but teammate Marta Marrero fell to both Patty Schnyder and Casanova, forcing the match to be decided in the fifth rubber. Belgium d. Croatia, 3-2 Kim Clijsters won both singles matches in her first action since early match and Els Callens won a very important fourth rubber in three sets as Belgium moved into the quarterfinals against Croatia. The teams were tied at 1-1 after the first day of action with Clijsters defeating Jelena Kostanic in three sets and Croatia's Karolina Sprem easily defeating Belgium youngster Kirsten Flipkens. Clijsters was able to better Sprem and Callens wrapped things up with a three-set victory against Kostanic. Italy leads Czech Republic, 2-1 (to finish Monday) Rain on Sunday delayed the finish of the tie between Italy and the Czech Republic. After winning the first two rubbers on Saturday, the Italians were unable to put the tie away when Barbara Strycova won the first match for the Czech Republic with a three set win against Maria Elena Camerin. Camerin was a replacement for Silvia Farina Elia, who was suffering from a fever.
