Top Seeds Challenged in Strasbourg
STRASBOURG, France - Top seed Lindsay Davenport's first steps on clay after a
four-week break were shaky, but she squeaked out a 76(5) 75 win over French
favorite Marion Bartoli Wednesday at the Internationaux de Strasbourg.
Davenport's last match on clay was on American soil at Charleston in mid-April,
when she reached the quarterfinals. She had already won on clay at Amelia
Island the week prior, overcoming world No. 3 Amelie Mauresmo 64 64.
Warming up for next week's Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam of the year,
Davenport now faces Katarina Srebotnik in the quarterfinals.
Srebotnik picked up a double bagel over Julia Vakulenko to earn her
quarterfinal berth.
Second seed Ai Sugiyama of Japan was challenged to three sets by compatriot
Akiko Morigami. Sugiyama dropped the first set, winning only one game, but
showed her trademark grit to clinch the win, 16 63 62.
Sugiyama will meet another gritty baseliner, Claudine Schaul, in the
quarterfinals. Schaul upset No. 5 seed Tina Pisnik, 75 62.
No. 4 seed Emilie Loit is the last one carrying the French flag as she eased
into the elite eight with a 61 62 win over countrywomen Stephanie Cohen-Aloro.
Loit, a two-time winner on clay this year, will take on rising 18-year-old
Barbora Strycova, who ousted another Frenchwoman, Severine Beltrame, 64 76(2).
Third-seeded Silvia Farina Elia secured her spot in the final eight, beating
Anabel Medina Garrigues, 60 36 64.
Qualifier Milagros Sequera awaits Farina Elia in the next round. Sequera
surprised Laura Granville 63 62 and advanced past the second round on clay
for the first time this year. Of the eight seeds, only the top four remain
standing.
