Former champ and seventh seed Jennifer Capriati advanced to the third round
early Thursday with a 7-5 6-3 victory over Czech qualifier Kveta Peschke.
The American struggled to find her rhythm early on in the first match on
Court Philippe Chatrier but used her wealth of Roland Garros experience to
overpower the tenacious Czech in one hour, 13 minutes.
Returning to pro tennis this year after an 18-month absence from the tour,
Peschke was far from disgraced. The 28-year-old hung with Capriati from the
baseline, but lacked the weapons to finish off the big points. She converted
just two out of 11 break point opportunities.
Peschke served for the first set at 5-4 but let nerves and an aggressive
opponent stand in the way, dropping the game to love. When it counted,
Capriati, the 2001 champion, brought out her powerful artillery, slamming 25
winners.
The inconsistent American reeled off the next four games to stand at 7-5 2-0,
before Peschke recovered to draw level at 2-2. The seventh seed broke again
in the eighth game (5-3) and then secured the win on her third match point.
She now meets the winner of the Elena Bovina (28) v Anna-Lena Groenefeld clash.
