Serena dejected after surviving Paris scare Thu 27 May, 2004 21:00 (adds details, quotes) By Francois Thomazeau PARIS, May 27 (Reuters) - Serena Williams survived a second-round scare against Russia's Maria Kirilenko on Thursday but sounded more dejected than relieved b y her 4-6 6-2 6-4 win. The second seed had very few answers on court to her 17-year-old opponent's "we ll-rounded game", as she put it, but she had lots of question marks over her ow n performance. "I think I made tons of errors. I was spraying the ball. I wasn't moving up to the ball. I was hitting short balls. You know, you name it", she said. Despite sporting her controversial new pink outfit in a lacklustre match lastin g two hours, Williams's mood was dark. "I'm a little disappointed. Actually, I'm terribly disappointed," she said. "I just had a bad day. I couldn't keep a ball in. In practice I kind of felt a little weird going into the match. "I was just spraying a lot if balls," she added. Losing in the second round would have been the 2002 champion's worst performanc e at Roland Garros. She came very close, finding herself a break down in the third set before power and experience helped her out of trouble against an inexperienced opponent, ra nked 100th in the world. But if she is to be believed, the former world number one beat a record of sorts against Kirilenko. "I just want to look at the stats. I think I made a thousand mistakes," she sai d. The statistics were actually far more modest, crediting the American with only 26 unforced errors. Williams, the highest remaining seed following the defeat of defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne, admitted she needed to play much better to stand a ser ious chance of winning the title. "I get better normally throughout the tournament," she said. "I don't think it' s a good wake-up call, but I guess I just need to play better. "I mean sometimes I really need to realise "Okay, Serena, maybe you should do t his". So I'm going to be on the practice court all day tomorrow," she added. Asked what she needed to do to improve before her third- round match against Cr oatian Silvija Talaja, she said: "I really need to practise early tomorrow and I won't have time to tell you everything that went wrong today." -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.219.101.22
