Davenport may need to rest knee before Wimbledon

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) -- Linsday Davenport may need to rest before Wimbledon be
cause of an injury to her right knee that she says contributed to her French Op
en loss.
The injury is a flare-up to the one that sidelined the three-time major champio
n two years ago.
``I've had no problems with it since I had surgery,'' Davenport said in a confe
rence call Wednesday. ``Slowly, the last month it's been bothering me and to th
e point now where it's been a little bit more frequent.''
Davenport was ousted from the French Open in the fourth round Sunday, losing 6-
3, 6-1 to Elena Dementieva.
Davenport was to have her knee examined later Wednesday, anticipating the docto
r will prescribe rest but no surgery. Davenport has three weeks before Wimbledo
n to see how the knee feels.
``I don't feel like I did anything too major to it, as bad as I hurt it in 2002
,'' she said. ``It's just a little concerning that it's started to hurt me on a
nd off over the last month.''
She had arthroscopic surgery on the knee in January 2002 and missed the first h
alf of the 2002 season.
Davenport had surgery on her left foot after last year's U.S. Open. Surgeons re
moved a mass on the foot that had been pressing on a nerve and severed the nerv
e. The nerve problem forced her to withdraw from last year's Pilot Pen tourname
nt in New Haven.
