Myskina withdraws from Eastbourne

EASTBOURNE, England (AP) -- French Open champion Anastasia Myskina withdrew
Friday from next week's Wimbledon warmup tournament at Eastbourne.
Defending champion Chanda Rubin and Russian teenager Maria Sharapova also
pulled out of the grass-court event.
Myskina, who defeated fellow Russian Elena Dementieva in last weekend's final
in Paris, said she was tired after winning her first Grand Slam title.
``I deeply regret missing Eastbourne -- winning a Grand Slam has its
consequences, both physical and emotional,'' Myskina said in a statement
issued by the Women's Tennis Association.
``I am exhausted from the daily wear and tear and am not prepared to start a
tournament this coming week.''
Myskina is ranked No. 3 in the world and is potentially the top-seeded player
at Wimbledon, although she has never advanced past the fourth round there. The
world's two top-ranked players, Belgians Justine Henin-Hardenne and Kim
Clijsters, have withdrawn from Wimbledon due to a viral infection and a wrist
injury, respectively.
Rubin said she was skipping Eastbourne to allow more time for a knee injury to
heal. Sharapova is scheduled to play in Saturday's semifinals at the
grass-court DFS Classic in Birmingham, England.
