Navratilova's Qualifying Attempt Fails in Eastbourne
EASTBOURNE, England - Eleven-time Eastbourne winner Martina Navratilova was
unable to secure a main draw spot into this year's Hastings Direct
International Championships after falling in the second round of qualifying
on Sunday.
The 47-year-old won her first singles match in more than two years on
Saturday after defeated Italy's Mara Santangelo, 64 63, but couldn't pick up
a second victory over the weekend - falling to Russia's Elena Likhovtseva,
64 62.
Eastbourne had also been the spot of Navratilova's most recent main draw
singles victory when she defeated Tatiana Panova back in 2002. This was the
fourth singles event Navratilova has played in 2004 after falling in the main
draw first round at Amelia Island, Charleston and Roland Garros.
Navratilova has won more Eastbourne titles than any other player and first
won the event back in 1978, before a majority of the current players on the
WTA Tour were even born. She followed by winning five consecutive titles
between 1982 and 1986, captured four more between 1988 and 1991 and won her
last title at the event in 1993, defeating Miriam Oremans in the championship
match.
Navratilova has a 93-11 singles mark at the tournament.
