Wimbledon Preview - The Veterans
LONDON - Success during the grasscourt season is a skill that is often built
up through experience on the surface. Often, there are players who will
become more and more used to the slick turf over the years, and realize their
potential given enough time to develop. Several veterans will be back this
year to use their experience to their advantage and make an impact on the
field.
No.17 seeded American Chanda Rubin, finishing the last few years ranked
in the top 10, has been on and off the Tour this year due to injury. However,
she has an overall 36-22 grasscourt record, with success in Eastbourne,
winning there in 2002 and 2003, as well as a runner-up finish in 1995, and
hopes to bring out her best grasscourt game to challenge the top players.
Bulgarian No.21 seed Magdalena Maleeva will be playing in her 12th Wimbledon,
her best result being fourth round appearances in 2001 and 2002. Maleeva also
won the title in Birmingham last year.
No.22 and former champion seed Conchita Martinez of Spain has an excellent
career 44-15 record on grass, including 36-11 at Wimbledon. Besides winning the
title, she has two other semifinal appearances, and has been in the
quarterfinals as recently as 2001.
No.24 seeded Frenchwoman Mary Pierce, a two-time Grand Slam winner, reached
the quarterfinals here in 1996, as well as the fourth round three other times,
including last year. She has built up her confidence as well as her ranking
after several extensive lay-offs from injury over the last few years.
Finally, American Lisa Raymond, the No.26 seed, has a career 48-30 record on
grass, including a 21-11 mark at Wimbledon. She reached the quarterfinals here
in 2000 and has three fourth-round appearances. Raymond also has one career
title on grass, at the 2000 Birmingham tournament.
A few players are hoping to recapture past glory at the All-England Club
despite recent problems with injury and inconsistent results. No.23 seed
Jelena Dokic, a few years ago ranked in the top 5, has a 26-13 grasscourt
record, including an excellent 17-5 at Wimbledon. She broke through at this
tournament in 1999, defeating No.1 seed Martina Hingis in the opening round
and making it all the way to the quarterfinals before losing to Alexandra
Stevenson. In 2000, she bettered her result, making the semifinals. Last year,
she was upset in the 3rd round by Maria Sharapova. She hopes to turn a
disappointing 2004 season around at what has been in the past her most
successful tournament.
Slovak Daniela Hantuchova, also ranked in the Top 5 just a year and a half ago,
has had a disappointing run as of late. Her ranking has dropped out of the
top 50 and she comes into this tournament unseeded. However, she has made the
quarterfinals of three of the Grand Slams, including Wimbledon, where she
lost in the 2002 quarterfinals to Serena Williams. Hantuchova hopes to turn
her fortunes around at the All England Club.
These players are eager to show the rest of the field that they can still
make a major impact at the most famous Grand Slam of them all.
