Davenport Collects Second Straight Player & Win of the Week
LOS ANGELES - For the second straight week, Lindsay Davenport proved to be
the toughest competition on the California hard courts - winning her second
title in as many weeks with a victory against Serena Williams on Sunday at
the JPMorgan Chase Open.
And for the second straight week, Davenport has been honored with the
WTATour.com Player of the Week and the WTATour.com Win of the Week.
Healthy and full of confidence following a triumphant week at Stanford,
Davenport rolled into Los Angeles sporting a new trophy and a new jacket,
after becoming the new leader in the Porsche Race to the WTA Tour
Championships. But Davenport put last week's success behind her and focused
on her new task at hand - winning her fourth title in the city of Los Angeles.
With a much deeper field in L.A. that included the likes of Serena, Venus,
Elena Dementieva and Svetlana Kuznetsova, the prospects of a repeat
performance from last week seemed not as likely, but that didn't derail the
American's plans.
A second round win against Anne Kremer, followed by straight set wins against
No.15 Amy Frazier and No.7 Nadia Petrova put Davenport into a semifinal clash
against Venus - the same Venus that stretched Davenport to a lengthy three-
set battle just six days prior.
After a very slow start - a 0-5 start - Davenport started to come alive and a
pre-match injury to Venus started to come exposed. Davenport rattled off
seven straight games to win that first set and the two that followed to begin
the third before Venus had to retire with a right wrist sprain.
This propelled the former World No.1 into the finals for the second
consecutive week where top seed Serena Williams would be the next challenge.
The same Serena Williams that Davenport had fallen to in every match since
the 2000 US Open quarterfinals and that same Serena Williams she held a
meager 2-9 record against.
But Davenport's confidence came into play from the start of the match and the
28-year-old dashed out to a 61 victory in the first set, committing just one
unforced error in that first set of play. The second set played much more
competitive, but Davenport was able to fend off Serena's six break point
opportunities, get a break of her own and defeat the younger Williams sister
in straight sets, 61 63.
The win in the final, her ninth straight victory on Tour, was the 42nd title
of her career in her 76th singles final. It also helped widen her lead in the
Porsche Race to 431 points over second-placed Amelie Mauresmo.
Davenport also became the first player to beat both Williams sisters in the
same WTA Tour event since Kim Clijsters accomplished the task en route to
winning the 2002 WTA Tour Championships. It is only the fifth time a player
has defeated both Venus and Serena in the same event.
"Going out and playing good tennis and being able to withstand two full weeks
of tennis against good players is great," Davenport said. "I’m building and
want to keep the momentum going."
