Davenport defeated Venus Williams two weeks ago for the Stanford title and was just one week removed from her Los Angeles title, where she defeated Serena Williams. This time, Davenport looked even more impressive than in her previous two Sundays, surrendering few points in a 61 61 victory against Myskina. Davenport has now won 14 straight matches. "I feel great, obviously," Davenport said. "I didn't know what to expect and I've surprised myself. It's been two tournaments without losing a set plus I'm staying healthy which is hard to do. "I proved a lot to myself these past three weeks. My expectations for the summer were different a few weeks ago than they are now." Myskina, who played a lengthy 2 hour, 28 minute semifinal match on Saturday night, had very few answers against Davenport. She dropped her first two service games and wasn't able to get on the scoreboard until her third service game to make it 5-1. Davenport served out the first set for 6-1, but didn't loosen her grip to begin the second and again opened with a service break. At 0-2 in the second, Myskina held serve for 2-1, but wouldn't win another game for the remainder of the match as Davenport quickly rattled off the final four games to capture the title. "I think it was draining for her (Myskina) emotionally and physically," said Davenport of Myskina's late night semifinal win. "No doubt that she was far from her best today." The title was the second in San Diego and first since 1998, where she defeated Mary Pierce for the title. Davenport has now won titles this year at Tokyo [Pan Pacific], Amelia Island, Stanford, Los Angeles and San Diego. Her San Diego victory was the 43rd title of her career, the ninth most in WTA Tour history since the beginning of the Open Era. By winning her fifth title of the year, Davenport is projected to jump to No.2 in the world. Due to her inactivity, Kim Clijsters is projected to fall from No.2 to No.5 and be overtaken in the rankings by Davenport, Amelie Mauresmo at No.3 and Myskina at No.4. If Myskina would have won the title, she would have leaped to No.2, followed by Davenport at No.3. Davenport has now won 11 of her 43 career singles titles in her home state of California, with eight of those in the lead-up to the US Open. By winning Stanford, Los Angeles and San Diego, she equaled the feat she was able to accomplish in 1998 when she also won all three events. Much like this year, Davenport also finished as runner-up at Indian Wells that year. She lost to Justine Henin-Hardenne in the Pacific Life Open this past March. Curiously, Davenport went on to win the US Open after previously accomplishing that run in 1998. In 42 main draw appearances in Californian Tour events, Davenport has failed to reach the quarterfinals or better on just three occasions, the last occasion being at 2000 San Diego (falling second round to Anna Kournikova). On top of her 10 Californian Tour titles, Davenport has finished runner-up another nine times (2004 San Diego being her 20th). The American improved to 3-0 against Myskina, with all three of those victories coming on hard court. Davenport's previous two victories against Myskina came in New Haven in 2001 and 2002. Myskina had won 15 of her last 16 matches heading into Sunday and had an impressive run in her second trip to San Diego. She began her week with a straight sets win against Barbara Schett and followed with another against Chanda Rubin. The Roland Garros champion defeated countrywoman and Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals to face another Russian in the semifinals, Vera Zvonareva. The two battled on court for nearly two and a half hours, playing the longest third-set tie-break in WTA Tour history, as Myskina prevailed 62 67(4) 76(15). After the match, Myskina had a massage and then watched the evening's last doubles match, which also features Zvonareva, as a way to "unwind" after such a long match. The doubles match didn't finish until after 12:30 in the morning, allowing Myskina seven hours of sleep in preparation for the finals. "I'm really exhausted and couldn't find any energy to fight," Myskina said. "Lindsay played unbelievably. I would have to play 200 percent to beat her today. I'm still really happy. It's been a great tournament for me and I did my best, that's for sure." Myskina was impressed by Davenport's play and said it would take an extra special performance to defeat Lindsay at the moment. "The person has to be 100 percent and serve 4 aces each game, return unbelievably and be lucky," Myskina said. In doubles, the No.2 seeded team of Cara Black and Rennae Stubbs defeated top seeds Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez, 64 16 64 for their fourth title of the year. The tandem has also won Sydney, Tokyo [Pan Pacific] and Wimbledon this year, while Black also picked up a title this year in Antwerp with Els Callens. Stubbs has now won 46 career titles, the 12th most in the Open Era. Meanwhile, Black collected the 17th doubles title of her career following the victory. -- ---禪心已作沾泥絮,莫向春風舞鷓鴣--- -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 140.118.122.149
