US Open Quarterfinal Preview
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - Eight days of gorgeous weather and spectacular
action at the USTA National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows have taken a
field that started with 128 and narrowed it to just eight players. Here's a
glance at this year's quarterfinal matchups:
(14) Nadia Petrova (RUS) vs. (9) Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) - First Meeting
Before the tournament began, many considered the spots in the top portion of
the draw to already be locked by No.1 Justine Henin-Hardenne and No.7 Maria
Sharapova. Instead, its two other young Russians who will be in battle for a
spot in their first US Open semifinal. Petrova shocked everyone with her
straight sets victory against Henin-Hardenne, while Kuznetsova has
encountered very few problems to reach the quarters. This will be the first
meeting between these two players.
Shinobu Asagoe (JPN) vs. (5) Lindsay Davenport (USA) - Davenport Leads 1-0
The most surprising player in this year's quarterfinal field will go
head-to-head with the game's hottest player in this matchup. Asagoe is the
only unseeded player remaining in the field and has definitely paid her dues
to reach the quarters. She upset No.24 Anna Smashnova-Pistolesi in the first
round, No.13 Paola Suarez in the third and No.29 Eleni Daniilidou in the
fourth to setup her clash with Davenport. The American defeated Venus
Williams in straight sets to grab her 21st straight win and move one step
closer to her fifth straight title this summer.
(8) Jennifer Capriati (USA) vs. (3) Serena Williams (USA)
- Williams Leads 10-6
Few matchups in women's tennis today come close to matching that of Capriati
against Serena, who will meet for the 17th time since 1999 and for the fourth
time this year. After eight losses to Serena over a two year span, Capriati
has proven she can play with the youngest Williams sister after marching to
back-to-back victories against Serena at Rome and at Roland Garros. However,
Serena easily gained revenge at Wimbledon with a 61 61 thrashing on Capriati.
(6) Elena Dementieva (RUS) vs. (2) Amelie Mauresmo (FRA) - Mauresmo Leads 5-2
For the second time in the last three Grand Slams, Dementieva and Mauresmo
will square off for a place in the semifinals. Dementieva pulled out a
shocker back in Paris when she derailed Mauresmo's plans for the French title
with a straight sets victory against the Frenchwoman. This will be their t
hird meeting on hard courts with each player winning on one of the previous
occasions. Dementieva, the runner-up at Roland Garros, is looking for her
second trip to the semifinals in New York (first was 2000),
while Mauresmo will seek her second stint in the final four in the last three
years.
