· Has won a total 31 WTA singles titles, 9 doubles titles and two mixed
doubles titles, including four Grand Slam singles championships
(Wimbledon, US Open, 2001; Wimbledon, US Open, 2000), six Grand Slam
doubles titles with sister Serena (Australian Open, 2003; Wimbledon,
2002; Australian Open, 2001; Wimbledon, 2000; Roland Garros, US Open,
1999), and two Grand Slam mixed doubles crowns with Justin Gimelstob
(Australian Open, Roland Garros, 1998).
· Has played on the U.S. Fed Cup team in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2004, and
the U.S. Olympic Team in 2000.
· In her first tournament back from an abdominal muscle injury first
suffered in April 2003 at Warsaw, lost in the third round of the 2004
Australian Open to Lisa Raymond, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
· Reached her fourth-straight Grand Slam tournament final at the 2003
Australian Open... Lost to sister and world No. 1 Serena Williams,
7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4... Venus and Serena became the first duo to reach four
consecutive Grand Slam finals in the Open Era.
· Defended her title in Antwerp in February 2003 to collect her first
title in six months.
· Lost to Vera Zvonareva in the fourth round of 2003 Roland Garros,
ending bid to reach her fifth straight Grand Slam final.
· Appeared in her fourth consecutive Wimbledon final, second only to
Martina Navratilova, who reached nine from 1982-1990...
Lost to sister Serena, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, after aggravating her abdominal
muscle in the semifinals.
· Sat out the last half of 2003 with her abdominal muscle injury.
· Reached first Roland Garros final in 2002, defeating former three-time
champion Monica Seles before falling to Serena Williams in the first
all-sister Roland Garros singles final.
· Reclaimed No. 1 singles ranking on June 10, 2002; with sister Serena
ranked No. 2, they became the first siblings (male or female) ever to
occupy the top 2 spots in the tennis world rankings.
· Extended win streak at 2002 Wimbledon to 20 matches before falling to
Serena in the first all-sister Wimbledon singles final since 1884.
· Was a finalist for the third straight year at the 2002 US Open, falling
to Serena to end a 20-match winning streak at the tournament and a
19-match win-streak during the 2002 campaign.
· Successfully defended her Wimbledon and the US Open titles in 2001,
defeating Justine Henin of Belgium in the final at Wimbledon and
younger sister Serena in the final of the US Open... Became only the
sixth woman in history to win both titles in consecutive years and the
eighth woman to win back-to-back Grand Slam titles in the same calendar
year more than one time.
· Won her second Grand Slam singles title at the US Open, defeating
Lindsay Davenport, 6-4, 7-5, in the first All-American US Open singles
final since 1984 (first between two American-born women since 1979).
With the title, Williams extended her match winning streak to 26
straight matches. She and her younger sister, Serena, became the first
set of sisters to win US Open singles titles. Williams defeated world
No. 1 (Martina Hingis) and world No. 2 (Davenport) on consecutive days.
Williams came back from 2-5 down in the third set to defeat Hingis in
the semifinals.
· Won her first Grand Slam singles title at 2000 Wimbledon, defeating
Lindsay Davenport, 6-3, 7-6 (3), in the ladies singles final. Became
the first African-American woman since Althea Gibson won titles in
1957 and 1958 to win the ladies singles title at Wimbledon. Also won
the doubles title with sister Serena - their third straight Grand Slam
doubles tournament title in Grand Slam events they have entered.
Defeated No. 1 seed and No. 1-ranked Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals
of singles and Serena Williams in the semifinals en route to the title.
· At the 1997 US Open, became the first woman to reach the final in her
Open debut since Pam Shriver in 1978; was the first unseeded female
finalist at the US Open since 1958; ranked No. 66, was the lowest-ranked
woman to make a Grand Slam final since No. 68 Barbara Jordan won the
Australian Open in 1979; upset No. 8 seed Anke Huber in the third round
and 11th seed Irina Spirlea in the semifinals before falling to No. 1
Martina Hingis in the final; in her semifinal win over Spirlea, saved
two match points in the third-set tie-break; the final between
17-year-old Williams and 16-year-old Hingis was the youngest Grand Slam
final in the Open era; ranking jumped to No. 27, a then-career high.
· Along with teammates Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles and
Serena Williams, she helped the United States to a 4-1 win over Russia
in the 1999 Fed Cup final, played in Palo Alto, Calif. Defeated
Elena Likhovtseva, 6-3, 6-4, before losing to Elena Dementieva,
1-6, 6-3, 7-6. Also paired with Serena Williams to win the fourth and
final doubles point.
· At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, she became only the
second woman ever to win Olympic gold medals in singles and doubles,
joining 1924 Olympian Helen Wills. Won the gold medal in singles,
defeating Russia's Elena Dementieva, 6-2, 6-4, in the gold-medal match.
Defeated 1996 Olympic silver medalist Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain,
3-6, 6-2, 6-4, in the quarterfinals and teammate Monica Seles,
6-1, 4-6, 6-3, in the semifinals. In doubles, she and younger sister
Serena became the first set of sisters to win Olympic tennis gold,
defeating Miriam Oremans and Kristie Boogert of the Netherlands,
6-1, 6-1, in the most one-sided Olympic gold-medal match ever. Said
Williams after winning her singles gold medal, "Obviously, the
Wimbledons and the Grand Slams, you have so many opportunities to win
those, but this gold medal is just every four years….this is the one
moment in time for me, for my country, for my family, for the team."
· Was named the 2000 Sanex WTA Tour Player of the Year and Doubles Team
of the Year with sister Serena.
