Venus Williams: The comeback
The world already knew that Venus Williams was a champion—in 2000, she was
the first black woman since Althea Gibson to win both the U.S. Open and
Wimbledon titles (then she did it again in 2001)—but it takes even tougher
stuff to make a comeback. As Williams, 25, strode onto the court this July
for what would become the longest women's final in Wimbledon's 128-year
history, she was ranked only 14th, facing the number-one player Lindsay
Davenport and fighting her way out of a funk. Nagging illness, injuries and
personal devastation—her half-sister, Yetunde, was murdered in 2003—had
contributed to almost four years without a Grand Slam win. When doubt crept
in during her exhausting two-hour-and-45-minute match, she cast her eyes to
the stands. "My family rallies each other." They looked down and said, "You
can do this!" Williams says. "So I began to think, yeah, I can." She trailed
Davenport for much of the match but gained momentum when she finally won a
critical 25-stroke rally. After capturing the winning point, Williams simply
raised two fists and beamed. "I know it's my destiny to be doing great things
on the tennis court," she says. "I would have liked it to come sooner, but it
came at just the right time."
