KEY BISCAYNE -- Doctors have given medical clearances for Venus and Serena
Williams to resume practicing, according to a source.
The sisters are expected to return to the court in the next two or three days
and are hopeful of rejoining the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour for the Family Circle
Cup on April 10-16.
The $1.3 million event in Charleston, S.C., is the second clay court
tournament of the season after Amelia Island and is where the sisters could
resume a normal work schedule. Venus has a direct entry into the 64-draw
tournament, as does Serena by virtue of her gold exempt status.
Venus, currently No. 10, has played only one match this year, losing at the
Australian Open to the obscure Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova before developing
a serious elbow injury. Serena, No. 61, has played three matches, all at the
Aussie Open, where she lost to Daniela Hantuchova. Her recurring knee injury
has been to slow to heal.
Although the sisters dislike playing in the same tournaments, except Grand
Slams, it is likely they'll both play Charleston if there are no further
setbacks. While only Venus played there in 2005, both sisters played there in
2004 with Serena giving a walkover in the third round while Venus won the
title over Conchita Martinez.
