Freedoms net Venus Williams for 3 games

Tennis icons Venus Williams and Pete Sampras will be showcasing their talents
this summer in the Philadelphia area.
That was one of the developments of yesterday's World Team Tennis draft. The
Freedoms acquired the rights for Williams in a trade with the Delaware Smash
for financial considerations. Williams is a "marquee" player, meaning she
will play a limited number of matches. This season, she will play one home
match and two away for the Freedoms.
All players enter the draft with agreements to play for World Team Tennis.
The WTT regular season will run from July 6 to 26. The schedules of each team
will be released in about 10 days. The 12 WTT squads will play 14 matches,
seven at home and seven on the road. The Freedoms will again play their home
matches at Cabrini College in Radnor.
"It's a great draft, and we have a great team in Philly and want to win the
whole shooting match," Freedoms owner and WTT cofounder Billie Jean King said
in a phone conversation yesterday. "With Venus playing three and Pete coming
in, it will be great for the fans."
