The Times
One important wall has toppled thanks to Wimbledon’s courage
In a column in The Times last summer, Venus Williams presented a powerful
argument for equal prize-money for women at Wimbledon. Today, the three-times
singles champion gives her reaction to news that the campaign has succeeded
at last.
Venus Williams
6 am in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 22, 2007 – that’s a moment in time
that I will never forget. A moment in time 123 years in the making. I’m
hearing the words on the other end of the phone in my hotel room, but I still
can’t believe it. When a dream becomes a reality, sometimes it takes time to
settle in.
I’m thinking of the numerous hours logged on the practice courts and the
feeling of holding the Wimbledon champion’s trophy. I have always known that
there are no limitations in life and that if I kept doing my best, fighting
point by point, game by game, and never gave up, good things would happen.
Today my experiences within the lines of a tennis court are a metaphor that
helps me to grasp the importance of taking on fundamental challenges. The
challenges to make the world a better place. The challenges for equality
among all people.
With a vision for success and a determination to improve, the destruction of
barriers becomes an inevitable result. Whether it is winning championship
titles or, today, celebrating the advancement of an important social cause, I
am equally motivated to succeed.
From this moment forward, Wimbledon will be treating the women equally to the
men. That is what I’m hearing on the other end of the phone and a smile is
forming on my face even before the words have hit my conscious mind.
Credit where credit is due – Wimbledon, the most storied tennis event in the
world, has taken a very bold step forward and I respect and applaud its
leadership today. Less than 12 months ago I sat down at a table like I’m
doing now and wrote my concerns about the message that Wimbledon was
communicating by paying women less than men. Today, I hold a renewed
admiration for the courage that it takes sometimes to move beyond the past.
It’s an historic moment for women’s tennis and for the players, from
pioneer Billie Jean King to the stars of today, who have always believed and
never given up in the struggle for equality. But to be clear, this has never
been at its core about tennis or athletes. It’s been about the message that
we send – and the opportunities for – women and girls in all walks of life
across the globe.
Billie Jean King
In November last year I flew to Madrid, to our year-end Sony Ericsson
Championships, to participate in the announcement of the Tour’s global
partnership with Unesco to promote gender equality and leadership
opportunities for women. And I am not alone in my conviction for this cause.
We are able to celebrate today because of the conviction and dedication and
sacrifice of hundreds upon hundreds of athletes since the founding of the
Tour over 30 years ago.
Equality is a principle and it is a cause. More importantly for women, it is
a mindset. The decision by Wimbledon is significant because it will
positively impact that mindset in young girls and send the right message to
all corners of sport and all of our society, that women and men merit equal
treatment.
I was fortunate to have parents who always reinforced to me and my sisters
that nothing was beyond our reach and that there was no barrier that could
not be overcome. But there is no denying that barriers based on sex continue
to exist. Today one important wall has fallen and there is greater
opportunity for all women and girls because of it. In the world of tennis,
three out of the four grand slams now treat the women equal to the men. I
know that our players will not rest until we have achieved our collective
goal and I hope that today’s decisive action by Wimbledon will pave the way
to Roland Garros’s decision to do the right thing.
Somewhere in the world a little girl is dreaming of holding a giant trophy in
her hands and being viewed as an equal to other boys who have similar dreams.
It’s 7.15am in Memphis, Tennessee, on February 22, 2007 now and the world is
a better place – and the girls of tomorrow are better off – because of
Wimbledon’s decision to award equal prize-money.
