Let me first start by talking about Serena Williams. The lion-hearted tennis
player had her back not only pinned to the wall, but her only escape route
was darn near impossible. I can still hear the words of wisdom Richard
Williams preached to his girls when he first brought them to me at ages 9 and
10 to my old house on Longboat Key. He would say, “Girls, listen to daddy.
There is nothing impossible. Never for one second think that you can’t run
down any ball. You girls will be champions!”
Every time I am with Richard I can’t help but thinking about those days,
those predictions, and the absolute belief that the girls would be champions.
Never once did Richard speak above a whisper.
Serena comes across as a superb physical athlete who for many years just beat
up her opponents. I could go on forever trying to explain how Serena won this
match, but my take is very simple! She is a fighter who refuses to accept
defeat. This is better explained by my good friend d**k Vitale who says,
"It's passion, baby!" There is no doubt in my mind that Serena is very
special. She was down and out, but as the boxing referee yelled out “9” she
got up and found the inner strength to do the impossible.
I will always be part of the Williams family, and I accept the title of being
part of their team!
