Mariners at the plate: Wladimir Balentien had an RBI second-inning double off A's starter Joe Blanton. Yung Chi Chen hit a one-out solo homer in the third inning. Raul Ibanez had a two-run double in a three-run fifth inning off reliever Kirk Saarloos.
A's at the plate: Back-to-back run-scoring two-out doubles by Jack Hannahan and Brooks Conrad in the second inning off right-handed starter Miguel Batista accounted for Oakland's first two runs. Conrad's fourth-inning, bases-loaded sacrifice fly drove in the third run. Gregorio Petit had a two-run double in the fifth. Jeff Baisley ripped an RBI single in the seventh to put the A's in front for good.
Mariners on the mound: Batista pitched three innings, allowing two runs, two hits and a walk, while striking out two.
A's on the mound: Blanton stretched to four innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out two and walked none.
Cactus League records: Mariners 2-3; A's 4-2.
Up next: The Mariners play the Angels on Wednesday at the Peoria Sports Complex. Left-hander Erik Bedard gets his second start for the Mariners and second of the spring. Right-hander Nick Adenhart is slated for the Halos. The A's play the Padres at Phoenix Muni on Wednesday. Oakland's Lenny DiNardo is slated to start against Sand Diego's Randy Wolf in a battle of left-handers.
