[07亞錦]TPE/ MAS - Taipei show their mettle
INCHEON (FIBA Asia Championship for Women) - East Asian powerhouse Chinese
Taipei began their campaign with a clinical decimation of the Malaysian
challenge on Sunday. Taipei who had caused a few eyebrows to raise winning
the silver medal at the 2006 Doha Asian Games did raise a sweat yet cruised
through to starting their campaign on a triumphant note.
The encounter the first between the two teams in the 17 years bore much
resemblance to the one Chinese Taipei won 132-48 way back in 1990. Numerically,
Sunday's scoreline might have looked different, but the domination of Chinese
Taipei which brought down the curtains on the opening day, was complete.
Chinese Taipei looked composed and better organized throughout. Playing
an unfancied team had no bearing on their attitude as Yi Liu Chun -- who top
scored - and Lin Wen Chi taught a few lessons to the Malaysians who had
qualified for Level I at the previous edition.
Not that Malaysia did not put up their best, but that was not good enough
against much taller rivals. Where Taipei's score grew in a geometric series,
Malaysia had to be rather content with an arithmetic growth to their scoreline.
Taipei coach Hung Ling-Yao Lin was happy that he team opened the campaign
with a win. "It really doesn't matter what the scoreline was. Because, I was
basically looking at our players getting used to the court and the
surroundings. I think we achieved that."
Malaysian coach Tan See Wah sounded rather defensive. "We knew we didn't
stand a chance. But then, we had qualified from Level II. So every game for us
in Level I is good enough."
