Rodriguez's fast start has put him on track to hit 63 homers and drive in 171 runs. Next stop for A-Rod and the Yankees is San Francisco for a three-game Interleague series starting on Friday against the Giants and Barry Bonds, who is just seven home runs shy of Hank Aaron's career record of 755. In a season where fans and the major league commissioner are conflicted about whether to honour Bonds or shun him over his suspected use of steroids, Rodriguez could find himself crowned a "true" home run champion. Baseball's home run lineage begins with Babe Ruth, who made the long ball a staple of America's pastime in the 1920s. Ruth's magical 60 homers in 1927 stood as the American League and major league standard for 34 years before fellow Yankee Roger Maris smacked 61 in 1961. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa rewrote the record book when they waged an enthralling home run duel in 1998 credited with reviving interest in baseball after a damaging labour dispute scuttled the 1994 postseason. McGwire, playing for the National League St Louis Cardinals, went on to blast 70 homers to 66 for Sosa, who slugged for the National League's Chicago Cubs. Their home run heroics were later cast into doubt by suspicions of use of performance-enhancing drugs and many fans sneer at the long ball records of the so-called steroids age. If the exploits of Bonds, McGwire and Sosa, who this week became only the fifth player to reach the career 600-home run mark, are not embraced, A-Rod might reign supreme with the purists, should he continue his home run assault. A-Rod, who has never been tarred by doping suspicions, was tied with Maris through his team's first 69 games with 27 homers. Ruth had amassed 24 in the same span in 1927, according to figures supplied by Elias Sports Bureau. Bonds smacked 36 by the same stage of his 2001 season. -- Drive to my World: http://www.wretch.cc/album/album.php?id=rodvader&book=19 -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 203.69.75.117
