Alex Rodriguez goes 0-for-4, strikes out 3 times

CLEVELAND - Maybe Alex Rodriguez should have blamed his latest playoff
debacle on the gnats.
A-Rod
It's October and the Yankees' $252 million man again is struggling at the
plate, with the team's 2007 season now one loss from being over.
Rodriguez had a chance to turn his postseason fortunes in the top of the
ninth last night, with Bobby Abreu on second in a tie game.
Instead, the likely 2007 MVP lost a nine-pitch battle with Indians starter
Fausto Carmona, striking out on a 96 mph sinker that A-Rod said moved a foot
by the time it got to the plate. It was Carmona's 113th and final pitch of
the thrilling game and Rodriguez came up empty - again - to the sounds of
44,732 roaring Tribe faithful.
"I looked up, I knew he had (thrown) over 100 pitches. That's the spot of the
game where you want to be," said Rodriguez, who finished 0-for-4 with three
whiffs.
"There's no question, I was excited about the situation. I thought I was the
right man at the right spot. I worked him, fouled off a couple pitches. I tip
my cap. It's not over, though. We've got to come out swinging (tomorrow)."
After carrying the Bombers all season, Rodriguez better get going if he wants
to keep the Yankees' season going and end the stigma he's earned as a playoff
choker.
Dating back to the previous two division series in '05 and last year, A-Rod
is now a staggering 3-for-35 (.086). Going further back, he is 4-for-50 since
hitting a home run in Game 4 of the 2004 ALCS, and he doesn't have a single
playoff RBI since then.
He is 0-for-6 in the two losses this series, with only two Game 1 walks to
show for his troubles.
The latest pitcher to torment Rodriguez was the 23-year-old Carmona, a
Dominican phenom, who entered having surrendered only one hit in eight
previous at-bats to Rodriguez. The lone hit was Rodriguez's career homer No.
501 nearly two months ago here at Jacobs Field.
A-Rod admitted that the young pitcher has "had the best of me. I've had one
swing, that was it."
A-Rod
Rodriguez was surprisingly chatty at his locker after the game, but adamantly
denied that he is squeezing the bat too tight in key situations.
"I'm not pressing, but I've got to swing at strikes. I've got to understand
if they're not pitching (to me), I've got to go to first.
"You've got to trust guys behind (you)," he said. "It was a combination of
being a little impatient and Carmona having pretty good stuff. I stuck around
long enough in that ninth-inning at-bat."
Indeed, Rodriguez fouled off four of Carmona's pitches during the at-bat,
watched Abreu steal second and finally swung at a sinker that was outside the
strike zone.
"I asked Laz (Diaz, the home plate umpire) if it was a strike and he said
no," said Rodriguez.
Rodriguez was 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position, stranding Derek Jeter
at second base in the fourth.
Rodriguez had better luck swatting the swarm of gnats that settled over the
infield in the later innings than he did hitting Carmona's heat. Now, with
the series heading back to the Bronx, A-Rod will have to turn around his game
to prevent fans, who showered him with "M-V-P!" chants all year, from turning
on him.
Asked if a big hit would relieve his pressure, Rodriguez smiled.
"I think a big win right now would take a lot of pressure off all of us," he
said. "Again, I know what I'm doing, I've just got to fix it."
