With George Mitchell's upcoming report on performance-enhancing drugs in base- ball due out soon it got us wondering. Would, or should, the players revealed as performance-enhancing users be penalized by suffering a decrease in ratings or attributes when the next wave of baseball titles are set to release in early spring of next year? Early rumors speculate that there are a number of "big" names on the list, so let's take a closer look at what gamers may end up find- ing next season. It seems as though everything Jose Canseco said about steroids in baseball is completely true. First, Canseco's statement about former first basemen Rafael Palmeiro's steroid usage turned out to be right on. Then, we all remember Canseco's former teammate and "Bash Brother" Mark McGwire avoiding question after question in court about his own steroid usage, forcing us to believe that something out of the ordinary occurred. However, did you know that Can- seco has also mentioned one other name that he believes has been involved in performance-enhancing drugs? That name is Alex Rodriguez, Major League Base- ball's Most Valuable Player this past season. In a past interview, Canseco mentioned that he has never seen Arod use any drugs, but he is 100% positive that Rodriguez is not all natural. This brings me to my main point of the article. If Alex Rodriguez is one of the names on the list of players that used performance-enhancing drugs, will his ratings takea fall in all baseball games that are released from here on out? I'm not trying to pick on Alex, but he's obviously the biggest name in baseball right now. Plus, from what Cansecois saying he is more than likely to be a name on Mitchell's list. Even though Bonds has remained under constant scrutiny over the past few seasons about his "possible" steroid use, we still consis- tently see him as one of the better power hitters in every baseball game that's released. Obviously, Bonds hasn't given permission to use his name in any base- ball game for a long time now, but when we see "Joe Young" batting fourth with a ridiculous amount of power we know who it is. Despite his power attributes remaining high, they actually have slipped over the last couple of baseball games that have been released. One could argue that a drop from 95 to 91 in power is just simply because he's getting older and every great player slowly decreases year after year. However, one could also argue that the reason that Bonds has lost multiple points in the power category of attributes over the course of only a couple seasons is because publishers don't want to give as much credit to a player that everyone thinks cheated the game. In my opinion, I think we're going to see game publishers take into consideration the names that are on Mitchell's list when deciding how high to make certain player's attributes next season. Will this be entirely accurate? Maybe not, but many will gamers will say that it's fair. The reason I say it may not be entirely accurate is because even if it came out that Arod used performance-enhancing drugs, would he still not be among the top two or three players in the league with the most power? Yet, I believe that he would be subject to a drop in his power attribute that would place him somewhere in the top 10 instead of among the elites. I could also see some people stating that his power isn't "real" though because everything that he has done up to this point isn't natural. I think both opinions on the matter should be welcomed, but it will only be a matter of time now before we find out some answers. Depending on whose names are on that list, we could see the greatest amount of change in player ratings from one season to the next than any sports title has ever seen.
