A-Rod Meets Fans in Monument Park
For all the highly visible problems with the new Yankee Stadium – the even
shorter right-field porch, the forbidding moat in the lower bowl – it’s
important to remember the improvements, too.
As far as I can remember, at the old Yankee Stadium, there was never any
structured interaction between players and fans. Already at the new place,
Manager Joe Girardi, General Manager Brian Cashman and several players have
met fans at the gates in the Great Hall. On Tuesday, Alex Rodriguez met fans
for almost a half-hour in Monument Park.
Rodriguez posed for dozens of pictures, signed a few autographs and chatted
up the friendly crowd. Rodriguez is a complicated personality, but he can be
charming when he wants to be, and the fans seemed smitten with him.
If you’ve never been, Monument Park really is a special place. The plaques
are larger and more impressive than those at the Baseball Hall of Fame, and
the monuments are a touch of grandeur you won’t find at other ballparks.
That said, here’s hoping the Yankees redesign things next season so more
fans can see Monument Park during the game. It seems forgotten in its present
location, tucked under a sports bar and low-hanging netting in straightaway
center field. It’s more like a cave than a park.
The Yankees could improve the presentation by stacking the bullpens – as
they do in Baltimore and Philadelphia – and moving the monuments to a more
visible location, in left- or right-center field, where trees and landscaping
could add to the ambience. I have no idea if that’s feasible, structurally,
but it would make sense to try.
